A Portsmouth Ohio citizen presses support for G O P Congressional candidate Edward C. McCowen, arguing his war pledge and opposition to New Deal measures. The piece questions views of radio commentator Walter Winchell and cautions public discussion of war matters during wartime.
Anne Clark of Goshen Grange won first prize in bread baking with L Bamer of Patavia taking second. Other contestants included Clara Gray Felicity and Estelle Dumford Clermont among many. Bread loaves sold for a record 55 cents each at auction. Page also notes crochet, knitting, bedspread, and hybrid seed contests with Marathon Mt. Carmel Bethel Ban tam and Clermont earning Pomona honors. One act plays were submitted with judges named and Booster program at Bantam Grange last week.
Recent deaths list Orin F Braselton husband of Anna Braselton of Williamsburg Ohio at Brecksville Veterans Hospital on October 17 1942. Also Josephine Dix Frye wife of Geo Frye of New Richmond Ohio died October 14 1942. Siehove Riehle mother to Robert P and Raymond L Rein resident Milford Ohio died October 18 1942.
Miss Margaret Hempel and Harry Red Howard married last Saturday night at a College Hill parsonage. Mrs. Howard, sister of Mrs. Clarke Gregg, has worked at the Bell Telephone Exchange. Mr. Howard, son of Dr. Gerald Howard of New Richmond Ohio, is a paratrooper stationed at Fort Bragg, South Carolina.
GE won the home beautification trophy with 31 contestants and will be their permanently. A fine afternoon program at the County Home included fruit for attendees. Mr J W McDonald Batavia school superintendent will speak at the Grange Victory Banquet Monday Oct 26 at the U B church Batavia. The Grange vocal quartet contest will be held during the event.
A large crowd about 700 filled the Amelia school auditorium for a Republican meeting. Local candidates Manly Hill Blythe Jones John Hayden and others spoke while Mayor James G Stewart of Cincinnati gave an inspirational talk. Music from Batavia high school band and prayers framed the event.
The Highway Department advances center lining of Clermont county roads this year and extends the program to villages. Residents praise the safety measure while it supports wartime blackouts by guiding drivers and pedestrians. Representative John Hayden helped start the effort.
The Batavia Community Xmas Committee appeals for old toy donations for Batavia's community Christmas. The Manual Training department of the high school will repair the toys. Girl Scouts will collect donations or toys can be delivered to the high school.
Pvt. Herbert L. Nordyke has been selected to attend the Gunnery Course at the Armored Forces School, Fort Knox Kentucky. He serves in A Reconnaissance Company, 40th Armored Regiment under 2nd Lt. Harold Rosenberg and is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Nordyke of Amelia.
Clermont county farmers who own trucks and need help filling out the required farm truck registration cards may visit designated locations on October 22 23 or 24 between 1 and 5 PM and 7 and 9 PM. Sessions will be at M schoolhouse Beth el Farm Breau 3 A office Batavia and Goshen schoolhouse.
A Sunday birthday dinner celebrated Mrs Ellen Winspear's 91st birthday at daughter Mrs Clifford White's home in Amelia. Attendees included Catherine Winspear Marie Biffle Clara Winspear Clara Marie Winspear all of Cincinnati and other relatives from Amelia Waynesville Batavia and Amelia with afternoon visitors John Pommert Helen Coulter.
A freak three-horned buck was bagged during the hunting season on North Pender Island in British Columbia. One horn grew on the right side and two on the left side of the head.

Four young men from Georgia and Batavia completed preliminary training at the Naval Air Station Pensacola Florida known as the Annapolis of the Air They enlisted last month in Cincinnati and were among the first group sent directly to Pensacola for indoc trination after which they were assigned to duty at the station The men from Amelia Gillo Huntington Harold Frey Cornell Bair and Burton McGuire are cited as volunteers aiding the nation's war effort and seeking solid future trades
Game Protector Edgar Anstaett released 7000 bullheads and catfish in Clermont County streams last week. The release included finger to adult size fish across multiple sites.
The County School Superintendent records weekly scrap totals from multiple schools. Lindale 13000 lbs led by Mike Walker Jr 6500 lbs. New Richmond 20000 lbs. Moscow 16000 lbs led by Edna Marie Warden. Edenton 2150 lbs led by James Allen. Pierce Twp 4000 lbs led by Roy Smith. Franklin 2149 lbs led by Edward Schirmer. Jackson 4891 lbs led by Barbara Frazee. Laurel 5182 lbs led by Jas. Jones. Other schools excel but have not reported yet.
The Batavia Speedliners closed their 1942 baseball season with a 6 to 2 victory over Mt Crab, champions of the Clermont Brown County League. Potter allowed two hits as Batavia tallied four runs in the first inning and rapped 14 hits. Ireton and Day led the offense with seven safeties between them. The Speedliners were undefeated in the last half of the season and claim titles in Clermont and Brown counties.
C L Harrison, Commissioner of North Union Two Civilian Defense Council, proposes two improvements for Oct 14 blackout: enhanced telephone alerting from headquarters and clearer citizen understanding of signals and rules. He details auto siren alerts, partial blackouts, and radio usage during the exercise.
