The Stonelick Township Horse Thief Association votes to widen its mission to protect members from petty thieves and to hire a pack of bloodhounds for pursuing suspects. The group, one of the county’s oldest, lists officers and an extended roster of members.
The grand jury sits with about twenty criminal cases on docket and the petit jury is called for November 8. Judge Davis presides as Clermont learns that Dr and Mrs William B Doane’s daughter Harriet Goodloe will wed William Merrill Fulton on October 21 in Amelia Ohio. The brickyard area is described as dangerous with recent daylight robbery and limited security by one watchman amid sprawling structures and murky alleys.
Howard P. Henning and Miss Anna N. Earhart were married at 8 pm on October 6 in Locust Ridge with Rev. G. M. Fulton performing the ceremony. A supper for about thirty relatives followed and a reception the next night at the groom’s parents’ home preceded their planned farm housekeeping near Bethel.
Disastrous flames destroyed the barn and home of Thomas Newsham and the Davis residence near Boston on Wednesday night. Frederick Moore of Amelia, a cattle buyer, visited Batavia to buy a bull. After drinking in a saloon, he joined two hobos to walk to a trestle where one held him by the throat and stole his money. Moore reported the theft, two tramps were jailed, and the case awaits grand jury action. The young robber with one arm was identified as one of the assailants.
Louis Hicks of Batavia selected by Brown and Clermont Republican committees as candidate for Judge of the Court of Common Pleas in the Gisbet district composing Brown and Clermont counties. Hicks is a renowned jurist in the Sixth District and considered highly qualified. Joseph Wiley of Washington township named by the county Republican Executive Committee for treasurer, replacing Otis Dudley who declined to campaign. Wiley, a Moscow banker with long banking experience, is cited as of high integrity and capable of an active campaign.
Judge Hulick named Hugh Taylor to the Naval Academy at West Point. The young recruit wrestled with drum duties, chose patriotism, and last week joined the regular army as a private with privileges. The Frank Duckwall farm in Elk Lick bottoms, twice offered for sale, was sold last week to Valentine Hardin of Illinois for $7,200, at two thirds of appraisement. Hardin, a wealthy Illinois citizen and brother of O H Hardin of Bethel, will not settle there but will improve it to raise value.
Two handsome blood-hounds from Nashville are consigned to J. M. Dyer for care and training. The dogs, of a fine strain, are prepared to trace fugitives and will be tested this week with a two hour head start to the quarry. They belong to the town and will be rented to those needing their services.
A Clermont native, Lowell/Hubedubash, claimed as first to find gold in the Kinnditte region during early Alaska explorations. He joined a coal prospecting party in 1883 and briefly panned gold, but did not pursue further. He recalls Klondike tales amid harsh travel and scarce provisions. Doan's Kidney Pills ad closes the passage.

The Cincinnati Presbytery Sunday school committee will hold forenoon services in Williamsburg on October 17 and an afternoon session at 2:30 in Bantam’s Presbyterian church. Revs Blakemore Deerness and Powell of Cincinnati will lead. The group promotes Sunday school work and is widely welcomed. Also Friday marks the Daughters of Rebels anniversary celebration by the Bata via lodge with Williamsburg lodge participating.
An assignee sale will be held Saturday at 420 dollars for a tract including a house, barn and outbuildings on 68 acres. The purchaser is Valentine Butrin of Thomats, who also bought the Frank Duckwall farm in the same neighborhood.
J C Martin a noted Wilmington attorney drew a revolver during a Saturday altercation with George McMillon. The confrontation left Martin wounded but unverified results. authorities placed both men under scrutiny as the case unfolds.
In Ohio tobacco districts daily sales of tobacco products increased over 1894 by 518,058 pounds of cigars and 7,706,084 cigarettes. Prices for tobacco rose and seasons were favorable, allowing smokers to smoke more.
The First National Bank of Batavia sues Isaac Starks and John A. Starks on a note for 415 with eight percent interest from February 185. Jamieson represents the bank. Elizabeth C. Stockton, administratrix of Bert N. Stockton, sues FL. Peters and V. Peterson on a note for £100. J. R. Woodlief and Caleb S. Laycock guardians sue Georges P. Scott and Ann Enza Smith and Louisa Morgan on note and mortgage for 30. The cases list Swing & McDonald as attorneys.
Sarah M Weaver daughter of Samuel Weaver departed this life at her parents home on Tuesday October 12 1s7 born September 15 1822 aged 64 or 65 years She endured long illness with patience and will be buried from the family residence tomorrow at six o clock in the evening
