At the Gregg Homestead in Clermont County a Columbus Day era event drew about 250 guests of the Histrionic Society. Dressed in 1776 and 1860s costumes, they enjoyed a stage show of oddities, a corn husking, a grand supper, and dancing after Batavia Orchestra music. Judge Cox attended and several old-timers sent regrets.

Death of an Old Batavia Lady Sallie Grant
Mrs Sallie Grant widow of Charles Grant died at her Columbus home last Thursday of heart disease. She was killed at Chickamauga and was sister-in-law to John Grant of this place. A long-time resident of the county, she died in her 70s but appeared younger. She was intelligent and engaging, beloved by friends.

Blood and Wool Paroles From Ohio Penitentiary
Two Lermont convicts William McElfresh and Joe Culver received tickets of leave from the Ohio penitentiary. McElfresh, jailed since 1885 for manslaughter in a river saloon shooting, was released after seven years with a job secured. Culver, imprisoned since 1890 for five years over wool thefts, was freed for good behavior and aiding investigators.

Superintendent Loses Foot in Train Accident at Batavia Junction
George W. Johnson, superintendent of Newtown schools, lost his right foot when a freight train struck him as he attempted to board near Batavia Junction. He fell into the gutter, the limb severed by the wheels, and was taken to his home by bystanders. He is expected to recover though permanently maimed.

Corner Stone Laying by Ohio Masons in Springfield
On Wednesday October 19 the Ohio Grand Lodge of Masons will lay the corner stone of a home for aged and indigent. The Springfield site has donated a farm and eleven thousand dollars. A grand parade at two oclock plans to feature ten thousand Freemasons and Knights Templar led by Grand Master Levi C Goodale. Clermont Masons will attend and meet brethren rarely seen, in what promises to be a grand ceremony.

Thumb Amputation After Horse Halter Mishap
William Gernon a Baldwin and 18a Huckster was leading a horse with a leather halter looped around his thumb. The horse jerked to water startling the animal and pulled the halter through the hand. The resulting ragged wound required amputation between the first and second joints of the thumb.

Tragedy at Otway as Teacher Drowns Near Swimming Hole
Bertha Rose a young teacher drowned near Otway Scioto county after a grape gathering with pupils. At a vine swing, she fell into the creek and could not reach shore. A rescue followed but could not save her. body recovered about 45 minutes later.

Lebanon con man hawks life size portraits for twenty five cents
A man claiming to represent Bellsmith of Cincinnati toured Lebanon and Mason with a life size portrait sample of the late Richard M. Cox. He offered cabinet portraits for twenty five cents, collected in advance, and many locals paid only to find no portraits arrived. Some cabinets were later found under a depot platform as investigators checked the scam.
