The Wilmington Journal explains the new war revenue tax on a 20 dollar weekly wage. Married workers are exempt. bachelors pay 2 percent on income over 1000 dollars, about 80 cents for a 1040 yearly salary. Exemptions exist for mortgages, interest, taxes, repairs, water rents, and insurance, reducing taxable net income.
Sugar supply updates reassure readers as Beet sugar begins to enter markets. A Hillsboro consignment arrived for McKeehan Hiestand wholesale grocers, with Batavia merchants receiving part of the stock. Beet sugar praised for use beyond baking and jelly making.
Irvin Wasem of Vermillion Erie county Ohio is named the state corn boy champion. He will travel to Washington and New York December 8 9 with expenses paid by Governor Cox. Wasem yielded 148.07 bushels from one acre earning about 123.54 dollars profit. Second place went to Paul Hanes Arcanum Darke county with 150.85 bushels and 101.81 dollars profit. Third placed Rowley Hanes Arcanum 146.66 bushels and 108.96 dollars profit. Dewey Hanes Arcanum is noted as previous two years state corn boy champion but did not compete this year.
Washington says the new circulating quarters since August feature a redesigned Goddess of Liberty and a higher flying eagle with three stars beneath. Hon W A Joseph at Governor Cox request appoints a Clermont county committee to aid 1800 registered draftees in answering seven day sworn questions under new rules. The county committee asks every Clermont county attorney to volunteer free of charge for patriotic service led by W A Joseph chairman W C Bishop and Allen B Nichols.
A coal shortage in Clermont County prompts appointment of a committee to work with State Coal Director H. E. Johnson and local leaders Dr. Louis A. Walton Milford Paul A. Pathe Bethel James E. McKever Williamsburg P. F. Jamieson Batavia and Frederick Edgington the Clermont County Coal Administrator. A Batavia meeting this week will prioritize immediate coal needs.
The USDA cautions large quantities of soft corn in Middle West markets are at high risk of spoilage due to terminal congestion and slow railroad delivery to drying plants. Farmers and shippers should delay moving soft corn until conditions allow rapid conditioning before cold weather arrives.

Money in the United States rose to 4.9249 billion with a per capita of 47.03, the highest on record. The gain is driven largely by Federal Reserve Bank notes, while gold coin in circulation remains 871 million higher than a year ago. The total money stock, including reserves, stands at 5.7687 billion, up about 1 billion in the year.

A deserter and pursuing officer boarded a Detroit to Petersburg train on a N & W line. The man leapt from a car window at Eastwood during a hot box stop. authorities hunted him all night. The fugitive, Vasil Psloksiuty, 23, Polish, was later jailed after $440 in postal certificates were found sewn in his trousers. He is from Company E, 810th regiment.

W. O. Kirk a Peebles businessman convicted of contributing to the delinquency of a 16 year old girl in juvenile court was sent to the Cincinnati workhouse last week to serve a $100 fine plus $420 in costs. He will receive 60 cents per day for services rendered.
The comptroller is sued for issuing a call for a report on the condition of national banks as of November 20, 1917. Many city banks submitted their reports Saturday while most rural banks are expected to report this week.
County superintendents met at Superintendent Aultman’s office on Saturday. Attendance was light and only a few matters of importance were discussed.
Three Protestant churches unite for a Union Thanksgiving service at the German United Brethren Church. The service begins at 10 a m with Rev R B Wilson of the M BE church delivering the sermon. The Presbyterian choir will sing. All are invited and urged to attend.
The Federation of Farm Woman's Clubs of Clermont county holds its annual agricultural meeting at the Afton M KE church this Wednesday night the 28th. Hon Charles E Kearns will give the address with readings and music by the clubs. No admission. Date moved from the 80th to the 28th. All welcome.
8S. C. Weaver postmaster and his brother Jesse of Branch Hill bought the old Robinson farm on the Hast Fork above Batavia from Chas Bauer for 6500 dollars. The 40 acre bottom land farm yielded about 8100 dollars in produce this year 1917. Local location keeps price down but production remains high under war prices.
Batavia residents were awakened at 11 by the fire bell to the home of E. R. Justice on Broadway. The blaze started from an open grate and burned a hole in the floor before Harmon Brothers stopped it. Firefighters lacked light due to few lanterns, hindering extinguishment. House filled with smoke, nearly suffocating the crew. Loss about 200 dollars.
Columbus schools will shut for six weeks at Christmas after defeat of a public levy and a 300000 bond issue. The closure aims to save coal during the coldest months and avoid paying salaries in November and December, with plans to reopen in May. Other districts may follow seeking state aid.
