Washington issues the first Thanksgiving proclamation urging public prayer and gratitude. He sets aside Thursday November 26 for nationwide observance praising Providence, liberty, and the new constitutional government, thanking God for peace, union, and abundant prosperity.
The Batavia Church of the Nazarene reports boys lead in Sunday school attendance for a third straight week with higher turnout than girls. The church meets at Main and Water Streets and plans a new building on the Pancher property.
The Courier urges readers to enter the ScrambleQuote contest with a three week deadline. Mrs. Jean Trapp of Batavia won first prize with a Psalm quotation and a reading about bargains. Honorable mentions and weekly prizes include a Jumbo Popper Chef set and a Crosley television, with a 21 inch set planned for next week.
Clermont County to receive a civilian defense pumper unit as soon as three 10 man teams are formed and housing is guaranteed Col Patterson announced after a conference with Forrest Ely The unit will be one of two assigned to the area and teams will train under state or local fire marshal supervision Members will be on 24 hour call for aerial or ground attacks and may work with rescue or police teams later
Frances Reese head of Clermont County Child Welfare asks for 150 Christmas gifts or money to buy them for children under her supervision. Gifts or funds due by December 15 to the county courthouse. Some needs include a musical instrument for a school band and Boy Scout gear. Cards and wrapping will be sold at the courthouse to raise funds. Donors listed include Rum Join Us Circle Bethel Leland Douglas Withamsville Mr and Mrs John Kincaid Dayton Mrs Muriel Books Withamsville and Mrs Olive Kincaid Mr Carmel.
Dr Carl A Minning a former Williamsburg ar cian and Army Reserve major will open a new Batavia office in the Nichols residence purchased from Harold Nichols Batavia attorney He married Floyce Parham a major in the Army Nurse Corps on November 19 in a ceremony at Mayor J F Paschals home

WLW-TV in Cincinnati announces Amelia Ohio resident Addie B. Conley of Route 1 as the thirty fifth winner of the "If I Were President" contest. Another Amelia entrant, Mrs Earl Brandenburg of Route 1, is named the sixty ninth winner.

An early Saturday fire on Cole Road in Amelia caused about 3000 in damage to Shelby Johnson's property. The blaze started from an overheated stove. Johnson, his wife, and three children were in bed. Fire Chief Luther led efforts to confine the flames to the roof.
The Batavia office will be open only on Mondays Tuesdays and Wednesdays announced by Sara Kirk manager of the local Bureau of Unemployment Compensation.
Miss Mary E. Caskey of Loveland will lead the University of Cincinnati Student Speakers Bureau this year. A UC master's degree holder and former Muskingum College graduate, she also serves as educational director for the Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce and has taught speech at St Bernard. Students are available through the UC Speakers Bureau for evening meetings.
Charles F. Tilbury opens a new law office above the Green Shutters Restaurant in Batavia after practicing with Nichols Speidel and Nichols for over a year. A World War II first lieutenant, he studied at the University of Cincinnati and UC College of Law, graduating in October 1950. He is married to Betty Winter, with one son, and serves as commander of the Frank W. Weaver Post American Legion and secretary of Clermont Sportsmen, Inc.
More than 50 citizens including 23 school district representatives met in New Richmond to hear Kellogg Foundation officials outline a survey of Clermont County schools. OSU professors Dr. M. Z. Pond and Dr. L. E. Harris attended along with Dr. E. M. Eyman from Ohio. The foundation will advise the Clermont County Better Schools Committee as changes will be made by county officials. Discussions covered overcrowding such as the Williamsburg case where 975 students share space for 650, and temporary half-day sessions as a possible stopgap until the survey yields a permanent plan.
In Batavia Ohio Rev Edwin W Dittman pastor of St Louis church Owensville won a favorable verdict in a 10000 damage suit in Common Pleas Court The case stemmed from a March 3 1951 auto crash near Perintown with plaintiff Ora Harp of Loveland claiming injuries and lost earnings A separate 1000 claim by Esco Coffee Company Cincinnati Harp’s employer asked damages for a damaged truck The trial extended about two days and Dittman was defended by James W Walker and Ray Bradford Batavia
Charles Butler 25 of Route 1 Newtown received a state patrol citation on Sunday for unspecified traffic violations near Mt Orab Ohio according to patrol reports.
AMELIA OH Four motorists arrested for traffic violations by George Chase chief of police and tried in mayor Rob ert Groh court. Alverta Kinman Route 2 Batavia fined 100 with 60 and costs suspended for drunken driving. William E Daughterty 52 Route 2 Batavia fined 100 and costs with 50 suspended for driving while intoxicated. Kroger Route 1 Bethel and Wilma Fox Chintiet fined each with costs suspended for reckless operation.
Stan ley Jozefika of Milwaukee spent a night in Clermont County jail after Sheriff Clyde Dericks traced a Thursday phone report of a man preparing for a nocturnal journey along Route 132 near Batavia. The man, with a new bicycle, claimed he was on a sight seeing tour and left after a night’s rest.
The Amelia P-TA will hold its December meeting in the school auditorium at 8 p.m. Reverend David Williams will present a Christmas story and music instructor Mr. Chapman will direct carol singing. The executive board will serve as hosts.
Two new shops plan openings in Williamsville as Hartman's drug store launches a weekend grand opening while a 5 and 10 Variety Store owned by Mr and Mrs Charles Burkhardt opens Friday.
The Boy Scout Circus will be held here on 6 with music by the Clermont County Band under Dan Koch of Milford. The band performs a 7:45 to 8:00 p.m. concert before the show and leads the scouts in a march. Don Ault of Amelia will present authentic Indian dances and pageants in unique costumes, and scouts will demonstrate fire starting without matches. Chief Frank Braden of Cincinnati Council will announce the event.
Neville Kentucky man Richard Brown, 95, of Morehead, was cited by highway patrolmen for drunken driving after his car struck a guard rail and overturned. He was detained by patrol officers following the crash.
Batavia Selective Service clerk O William McMann announced that 16 youths have to report for induction on December 4. Names include Clarence Cole of Loveland, Leo Bailey of Bethel, Ralph Hunleys of Newtown, Vance Pribble of Pleasant Plain, Robert Wearver of Batavia, James Whitney of Newtown, Steven Di Sponcil Jr of Moscow, Jack Hall of Norfolk VA, Eugene Planck of New Richmond, Richard Morgan of New Richmond, Charles Whisner of Bethel, Glen Apgar of Owensville, Vincent Hamilton of New and Rodney Miller of Route 2 Morrow.
Clermont County VFW Post 3954 and Auxiliary announce a December 4 Christmas party for patients at Brown Veterans Hospital in Dayton. A variety show will be staged for the veterans.
