Captain John Conner the Oldest Steamboatman of the Ohio
Obituary recalls Captain John Conner a famed steamboatman of New Richmond dying at his river vantage home. Born August 27 1802 near Meadville Pennsylvania he commanded boats including Alleghany Zephyr Lancasters Freighter Orient and Mary Ament and served as county commissioner and infirmary director before retiring to farm life. His funeral was conducted by Rev N B Bennett and he rests in Green Mound cemetery overlooking the Ohio.

He was famed for work on the sphygmograph and had international recognition. Funeral was at East Walnut Hills Presbyterian Church. Cincinnati physicians issued eulogies.

He was a Jackson township pioneer, lived at Edenton with his son Elias, and was respected by all.
