Death of a Clermont editor in 1807
William E. Nichols longtime editor of the New Richmond Independent died at home in New Richmond on Wednesday afternoon November 17 1807 aged 62. He retired days earlier after a chill. his wife aided him, but he died despite medical aid. He was born in Hamilton county but lived in Clermont where he held public posts and served as deputy in the probate office mail agent on the C E road and justice of the peace. He leaves a widow and one son Arthur. He was known as an accurate and thorough writer and his loss is deeply mourned.

Mrs Sallie Scott and husband sparked trouble on Main Street leading to arrest by Marshal Young. A street parade ensued as town court opened and Flannagan defended Mrs Sally.
