Fatal hunting accident claims farmer near Love land
George Corbin, 40, of O'Rannionville Road, near Love land, was killed by a stray shot while hunting with relatives and visitors on the first day of the season. Tom Rose of Hamilton fired when his gun snagged on a twig, piercing Corbin's neck and causing instant death. Coroner and sheriff ruled accidental death. Undertaker A C Tufts prepared the body for burial as the community mourned the loss.

Smooth tongued check faker roams Batavia in wage-note scam
A smooth talking laborer visited Batavia and conned businesses including W. C. Kirk to cash checks for small purchases. He bought a harp and guitar and left an $80 drum order while passing a $34.85 check that bounced. The suspect used multiple counterfeit checks under $36, all returned unpaid. Authorities, including Sheriff Croswell and a Columbus banker, identify the man as a repeat offender timing each job under the $36 threshold.

After a long dry spell a heavy steady rain fell for over a day, refilling cisterns and water supplies for households and stock. The corn crop remains dry and needs moisture for handling, while fall weather favors outside work. Pike work progresses but no new winter contracts are secured.

Barn Fire Claims Henry Grelle at New Palestine
Henry Grelle aged 45 burned to death when his barn and contents burned at New Palestine on the Ohio river below New Richmond. The fire started about 1 15 p m unknown cause. Horses cattle and hogs were saved. Remains moved to White's funeral home for burial. Funeral Thursday at Mt Moriah. Widow three daughters and two sons survive. Loss 3000 partly insured. Clermont's fifth fire victim in eight days.

Cannery And Station Destroyed By Fire In Amelia
Fire at the A. W. Colter Cannery and the C. G. P. station in Amelia occurred Tuesday at 2 30 am. Flames spread from the cannery to the station as a south wind drove the blaze away from town. The Chemical fire department aided in battling the fire, with a loss estimated at 33000 partially insured. The cannery, started in 1890, was owned by Jas R Hicks of Amelia and E R Weachter of Mt Washington. It was Amelia's largest fire, with tomatoes beans and catsup prepared for market and shipped nationwide. Cause of the blaze unknown. The plant did not operate this summer.

Mayor Chaffin Convicted In Raccoon Hunting Case
In Batavia on Friday Mayor Chaffin of Williamsburg faced Mayor Larkin's court for hunting a raccoon out of season. Witnesses, including Duckwall and others, testified while Duckwall pleaded guilty to hunting without a license and paid 25 dollars plus costs. Larkin, after viewing the scene, found Chaffin guilty on Monday morning and imposed a 75 dollar fine plus costs. verdict declared final.

Wrecker Collision Delays New Richmond Girls to Batavia
New Richmond girl basketball players traveling to Batavia Friday were delayed when a wrecker from Amelia driven by John Purdum struck their car driven by J R York on the pike between Lindale and Hamlet. York’s car went into a ditch, fender bent and spare tire displaced. players proceeded to Batavia where they were defeated after a stiff fight.

Hunters Welcome Season Opens for All Game Classes
Hunting season opened November 15 allowing rabbit pheasant fur bearing animals to be hunted. Hunters report solid yields with few returns under legal limits. Polecats raccoons and muskrat catches are high with one hunter taking five polecats in a trip. Fur bearing animals abound along hollows and ravines with easy captures.

A four door Ford owned by N. N. Skinner of Amelia Route 2 was stolen from his residence Sunday night. License tag number 877866. Sheriff Croswell and deputies were notified Monday morning.
