First Winter Blaze Damages Parsons Home

A Saturday night fire gutted the east end of the Parsons home owned by Louis Buerkle after a defective flue sparked the blaze. Firefighters fended off water delays caused by missing hydrant wrenches. $2000 in damage was insured.

Parade and Meeting Draw Large Local Turnout

More than five hundred members families and friends attended the Get-To-Gether Meeting at Williams burg school auditorium last Thursday. A torch light parade began at 8 30 pm with over seventy five participants and fire crackers were set off to draw attention to the march to the school. District Deputy Grand Master J A Herbert delivered the main address. The event was public and organizers hope for more members.

Final collections of personal tax were made Tuesday and the books closed. Distributions of proceeds will be made within the next two weeks.

Batavia Fire Chief Warns Against Tampering with Equipment

Chief Clarke Gregg of the Batavia Fire Department warns that anyone who molests or borrows fire apparatus will be prosecuted. He notes a local habit of delaying water deployment and states out of town calls will not be answered unless subscribers funded the equipment.

Woman Sentenced for Bigamy in Ohio Case

The State of Ohio vs. Mrs. Virginia Flanagan heard in Judge White's court last week. Flanagan was convicted of bigamy and received a sentence of one to seven years at Marysville reformatory to reflect on her excessive marriages.

Ripley tobacco sale date set for December third

Officials announced the first sale of the 1940 41 season will be December 3 in Ripley the only burley center in the state. Four warehouses Independant Farmers Union and U K Warehousemen will receive deliveries from November 25 with a likely heavy pre Christmas sale due to a short crop and weather damage.

Chicken Supper and Movie at Williamsville School

Mt Moriali church hosts a chicken supper and moving picture show Friday December 6 from 6 to 10 pm at Williamsville Tabasco School. American Airlines provides an educational film “Flagships of the Air” at 8 pm. Admission 10 cents. supper served cafeteria style with 5 and 10 cent portions.

Aliens Must Register Before December 26 1940

Federal notice warns all non Citizens age 14 and older to register in person and be fingerprinted by December 26, 1940. Registration at post offices is free, with guidance from the Department of Justice and Post Office Department. Children under 14 must be registered by parents. Report address changes within five days to the Immigration and Naturalization Service in Washington.

Saxton to be Heard Friday Evening on Burley Quota Referendum

The Revival Meeting in the Pilgrim Holiness church at Afton Ohio continues this week with Evangelists Rev. Ester White and Rev. Katie Lock from Milton Indiana in charge. Vesta Club Marks 43rd Anniversary Celebration

The Vesta Club observed its forty third anniversary on November 12 at the Williams burg Presbyterian church. Mrs C C Knight read a paper recounting the club first minutes and historical data while Master Nickie White and several ladies provided music. Five charter members remain living and were among the attendees, including Miss Ella Holmes and Mrs Stella Miller.

Smith Named Head Of Farm Bureau

Walter Smith, Nicholsville farmer, was re elected president of the Clermont County Farm Bureau at the Batavia annual meeting attended by about 170 members. Officers elected include W R Owen as vice president and Mrs Harry Nott as secretary treasurer. Smith will be a delegate to the state Farm Bureau meeting in Columbus November 28 29 with R F Turner as alternate.
