Miss Maria Decca an Ohio born singer long abroad since 1882 has moved to New York to perform in English opera. She explains her stage name Decca adopted from a song manuscript and notes she is granddaughter of Captain Thomas L. Hamer who helped appoint Gen. Grant to West Point. Her singing is praised as superb.
On December 5 and 6 the Presbyterian choir stages Penelope, the Milkman's Bride and Pauline, the Belle of Saratoga in the Town Hall. Proceeds fund a stained glass window for the Presbyterian church.
Harvey Ward an elderly man stood trial in Pt Isabel for shooting with intent to kill after a confrontation with Story Little. The defense described Ward calmly walking when Little, climbing a torn fence, attacked with a revolver. Ward’s revolver discharged grazing Little’s temple, leading to a fight and a peace bond. The jury found Ward not guilty after four hours deliberation.
Nathan E. Grimes of Manchester, Adams county, was found dead on East Pearl street last Thursday. Formerly a successful business man, he left his wife and family three years ago and had not been heard from since. His wife, to support herself, sent their children to Wilson's orphan's home and later secured a divorce at the last court term. Grimes, a skilled mechanic, deteriorated due to temperate habits. The Soldier's Relief Commission will meet at Batavia auditor's office on Monday November 25 at 9 a.m. Some hunters use smokeless powder and return with invisible rifles. Graham recently visited Grimes at his Canada sanctuary. Grimes appeared well dressed but likely has little means. It is uncertain if he will be brought back to Ohio, and his family remains with him.
