On June 10 1911 Clermont county voters will decide on a 35000 debt for county seat improvements including a fire proof vault. Auditor Larkin estimates 8 cents extra tax per 1000 dollars yearly, about 12 cents for an 1500 dollar taxpayer, for a 30 year bond. Supporters urge the low cost benefits before voting.
Batavia held Decoration exercises Tuesday with a large crowd. Surviving veterans are feeble and thinning as time passes. Talks pleased attendees as bands played. Youths placed flowers on every grave, honoring the last dying veteran A. R. Allensgrave.
W. O. Baumgardner, son-in-law of Mr. and Mrs. L. F. Boulware of Hillsboro, has been appointed a post office inspector. His territory includes Michigan, Wisconsin and Illinois, with headquarters in Chicago. Mrs. Laura Boulware, a Williamsburg native, is pleased by the news.
The Milford council passed an ordinance requiring property owners to cut and destroy noxious weeds. If not complied with within a set time, town authorities may perform the work and add the cost to the property's tax duplicate for collection. State law also empowers township officials to enforce this.
General Sherwood of Toledo, chairman of the committee on invalid pensions, won a favorable report for his dollar-a-day service pension bill after five years of effort. He will present the measure to the Democratic caucus, with leaders promising favorable action in the House. Senate approval remains uncertain.
Baseball results show Batavia defeating the Y M C A 18 to 2 last Saturday. Batavia swept two games with Newtown Tuesday, 18 to 0 in the morning and 14 to 4 in the afternoon.
Commencement exercises for Milford High School took place in the Milford town hall on Thursday evening May 25 1911. The sixteen seniors included eight boys and eight girls, with diplomas presented by H A Hodges and a class motto Climb. The program featured valedictory by Charles Magee Adams journalism address by John Goodwin and a well received class address by Dr W O Thompson president of Ohio State University. Friday class day followed with a listing of the class roll.
Clermont County Federation of Women’s Clubs hosts a Milford meeting on June 8 with morning sessions from 10 to 12 including devotional reports, music, readings, committee appointments, and a lecture by Walter D. Cole D D on Our Own Country and the One Next Best.
A. V. Carroll of Carroll Jamieson Machine Tool Works shows a new E M F automobile bought from Jones and VanHorn last week. The car is described as fine and likely to provide pleasure and service. Batavia reports the largest auto count for towns of its size in the state, while Manchester has none.
Last week part of the force at the Jones Heelery were laid off for a short period between seasons awaiting orders for fall use. Not many idle people in Batavia.
Last week three farmers in Fayette county sold 75,000 pounds of wool to Mr Rathrock a wool buyer. The wool came from three farms and brought 16 to 18 cents per pound. Clermont farmers do not produce wool in such large quantities.
Officials in Xenia raided multiple venues rumored to sell liquor in a dry town. A dray load was seized and stored at police headquarters before being moved to a gravel pit and destroyed by the constable and squire.
Magee Adams, seventeen, blinded seven years ago by a shotgun accident in Columbus, graduates with honors from Milford High School. He delivered the valedictory on a year noted for its strong class of sixteen. Adams plans electrical engineering at Ohio State University next fall.
From earlier reports a state tax levy of about three million dollars annually will fund construction and maintenance of better roads in Ohio. The plan promises an improvement to the current road system and infrastructure.
A Farmer urges neighbors to vote no on a June 10 1911 measure to remodel the courthouse and build a fire proof vault costing 30000 to 50000. He warns of rising taxes from existing condemned turnpikes and county debt and calls for timely voting to avoid further burdens on farms and homes.
More than a score of Greene county officers and merchants must repay 4019.61 to the county treasury for sums drawn without authority. The state auditor’s report cites County Commissioner J. F. Harshman as the largest debtor at 536.65 for board of equalization services.
The village council last week approved new concrete pavements for Manchester. Residents may obtain them with half the cost paid by the property holder and the town covering the other half.
The Batavia Foundry under G. Wilkie reports heavy demand with orders ahead. Five extra moulders will be added Monday, as Wilkie’s business ability and managerial skill promise continued success.
Felicity ball team met Higginsport in a tight contest last Sunday week. Higginsport edged Felicity 10 to 9 in a hot, hard fought game with strong play on both sides.
Mrs. Fannie Gelvin Corbin, 46, a highly esteemed Nicholsville resident, died Thursday evening May 26 after months of suffering. She leaves a daughter, a sister, three brothers, and many relatives and friends. Funeral services were well attended Saturday at Laurel M E B Church conducted by Revs J Shepard A B Dunn and Reinharth, burial Carmel cemetery.
Public school teachers faced a marching demand from Superintendent Bryant during Memorial day events. He declared they must join the march or resign, noting a full quota of participants was in line.
Charles Sechrist, son in law of William Beeler, to be tried Monday June 5 in Amelia for the March killing at the town well. One hundred plus potential jurors were summoned. defense by Nichols firm. prosecution by Murphy with assistants.
Children’s Day exercises at German U B church next Sunday 9 to 11 am. The Young People’s Society will present a program at 7 pm. Lawn social and bazaar by Ladies’ Aid Society at the armory Saturday June 3 8 to 10 pm. All are invited.
Charles W Coleman of Amelia died last Saturday morning at age 69 after three years of ill health following his wife’s death. He was a longtime prominent member of the I O O F lodge in Amelia and one daughter survives. Funeral services were held Monday at 2 p m from his residence and burial followed at the I O O F cemetery.
Miss Ida Clark aged 80 assistant superintendent of the Cincinnati Enquirer died Monday afternoon at the home of her uncle M F Ross in Batavia after an illness following a surgical operation. Her body was sent to Cincinnati for burial. She was a daughter of Mr and Mrs Ed Clark.
Miss Eva Malott daughter of Mr and Mrs Elliott Malott East Batavia wed Will Hancock a Middletown youth at the bride’s parents home last Saturday at 1030 with Rev Burdsall officiating. Only close friends attended. The couple will begin housekeeping at once.
Mrs. Della Nichols of Los Angeles recalls her Ba tavia school teaching in a high school with over twenty one hundred students. She notes six weeks left in a strenuous term, twenty three five graduates this June and a hundred more next February. She plans a summer trip to Europe or visits Clermont on return home.
Mary Proctor Wilson of the Lebanon Patriot is offered the $2 000 a year matron post at the Girls Industrial Home near Delaware. The position, created two weeks ago by the General Assembly to place a woman in charge, depends on her acceptance amid uncertain tenure under the new board of control. Governor Harmon may press to keep her in the post if she accepts.
At a Batavia school board meeting last Saturday the hiring of teachers for the coming year was discussed and approved. Hired were Misses Elma Townsley Julia Long Ethel Weaver Frances Burlew Florence Glancy Stella Brown Cecile Hulick. Shinkle and Carrie Nichols did not apply. The superintendent’s position remains vacant. Alexander Ferguson, colored, was employed as janitor.
Michael Davis of New Richmond and nephew of Judge Davis has passed the entrance examination for the United States Military Academy at West Point. He is entitled to admission as a cadet upon reporting to the adjutant at West Point, New York, on June 14 before noon.
Marion Howard and Harriet Talley received scholarships for achieving the highest average across four years. Their average was about 94.3 percent with 9048 points out of 9600 after 96 examinations and tests, reflecting sustained academic excellence.
At a Bethel school board meeting last week all teachers were re employed and one additional teacher was hired due to expanded school size. The action reflects growth in student numbers and the board’s plan to maintain adequate instruction.
A group of Clermonters attended a banquet given by the Prudential Insurance Co. at the Grand Hotel in Cincinnati last week. Guests included Mr. and Mrs. Walter Bainum Arch Harris and Miss Flo Dillman Kline Dillman of Bethel and Mr. and Mrs. Albert Heinrici of Batavia. The evening was described as delightful.
