Saloon closures mark countywide shutdown after heavy week
Saloons closed their doors to the public Saturday night after a week of extraordinary business with many selling out before nightfall. The town remained orderly all day and evening despite being surrounded by closed bars. Near beer will be sold from most former saloons as breweries shift production.

Government trucks worth forty five million released
More than 45 million dollars of motor trucks are turned over to the Department of Agriculture by the War Department and will be distributed to state highway departments through the Bureau of Public Roads. The fleet totals about 20,000 vehicles and most are new.

Local farmers report tobacco plants set on about one and a half acres. Wet weather and crowding have yellowing beds, risking stunted growth. Many cannot prepare ground in time, while corn planting will follow tobacco in this first season if plant supply holds.
