Poppy Day Proclaimed for Batavia May 26 1951

The American Legion Auxiliary designates Saturday May 26 as Poppy Day to raise funds for hospitalized veterans who craft the poppies. Batavia Mayor J. F. Paschal proclaims the date and urges residents to buy and wear the poppies to support veterans in hospitals.

Grand Jury Returns 18 True Bills and Dismisses Nine

The Clermont County Grand Jury returned 18 bills against 11 persons and dismissed nine cases. Indicted individuals include Fred Myers, Fred Anderson, Woodrow Staggs, and John Howard among others. The panel commended Sheriff Dericks and his wife for jail operations and cleanliness. Robert E. Swing served as foreman with members listed.

County Sanitarian Resigns in Clermont County

Dr. W. H. Gaskins, Clermont County health commissioner, announced the resignation of Guy Smith of Williamsburg as county sanitarian. Smith joined March 2, 1948, serving three years after roles as teacher, music director, and secretary treasurer at Ohio Wesleyan University. No immediate successor named. a letter was sent to the State Board of Health requesting a temporary sanitarian.

Voters Seek More Funds for School Improvements

Voters will approve additional funds for ongoing school work, including 20000 dollars for the new cafeteria and other improvements. A prior bond of 35000 dollars proved insufficient, and construction enters its second week with a cloak room repairs slated alongside lunchroom upgrades.

Next Saturday May 26 the American Legion and Auxiliary will sell veteran made poppies in Clermont County. Hospitals view poppy making as therapy. earnings near half a million dollars this year and over two and a half million annually support disabled veterans and children of veterans. The poppy you receive is made by an Ohio veteran at the C-10 Soldiers and Sailors Home Sandusky.

Man Sentenced On Brother's Charges

William Malone of Owensville was fined 200 dollars and costs by Justice of the Peace Harry Hodges at Milford after an affidavit by his brother Chester accusing him of assault and battery. Malone was arrested on a drunk and disorderly charge and is held in Clermont County jail for failure to pay.

Five DUI Cases Disposed in Clermont Court

Clermont County authorities disposed of five cases recently. William Malone, 42, Owensville, held on drunkenness and disorderly conduct with $1,000 bond after Sunday arrest by Sheriff Clyde Dericks. John Carter, 51, Batavia, fined 50 dollars plus costs and sentenced to 30 weekends in jail for fighting by Mayor J F Paschal. George E. Mitchell, 64, deaf mute, fined 100 dollars with 75 suspended for DUI arrest by State Patrolman R D Young. William C. Christian, 22, Sardinia, fined 50 dollars for reckless operation. James K. Redfield, 23, Batavia, fined 10 dollars for operating with no muffler.

School Club Sells Plates For Fund Drive

Moscow School District Club members sell ten inch diameter plates etched with General Grant's birthplace to raise funds for school improvements. Cream color with maroon etching and gold trim, orders now being taken.

Dedication Rites Sunday At New Richmond Church

The First Baptist Church of New Richmond holds dedication services for its remodeled church on Sunday May 27 with Rev. Charles Harrison officiating at 10 30 am. Rev. D B Easter of Calvary Baptist Covington Ky gives the dedication address at 2 30 pm followed by Rev. L J Powell of Norwood Baptist at 8 pm. Public invited. The project began in August 1950 and will finish in August 1951.

Clermont County jury returns instructed verdict clearing Homer Mosbacker and Clarence Weiderhold of negligence and reckless driving in a 196? fatal accident involving Janet Anstaett, a 15-year-old girl. The bus driver had warned the girl to stay in front of the bus, but she moved into the car’s path. the case may proceed to the Ohio Court of Appeals.

Increased Water Rate Proposed to Amelia Council

Following a joint meeting, New Richmond and Amelia officials discussed a brighter outlook for a water contract. Amelia may approve raising the rate from 32.7 to 47 cents per 1000 gallons, intended to fund the main route project and attract new consumers.
