Truck Gas Tank Explodes After Rt 74 Accident
A tractor trailer caught fire after a collision on the new Rt 74 bypass west of Batavia. Driver John W Maklem 33 Williamsburg said the vehicle skidded on a slick road and the gasoline spilled near a road flare, igniting and causing the tank to explode. Damages were listed at 1200 dollars. Batavia Fire Department extinguished the blaze and oil slick created the slick patch.

Plans Advanced To Promote Town In New Richmond
The third meeting of New Richmond businessmen and civic leaders reported progress on improving the town. Housing and industrial committee chair Jimmy Bill Warden listed rental housing options, while Charles Mac McClanhan said parking for about 100 cars could be added behind the main business area after minor legal steps. The executive committee discussed shipment access from across the river and urged coordination with New Richmond National Bank. Transportation and advertising plans included bus service, billboard road signs, co op ads, and town beautification through refuse cans. No new businesses opened, only a laundromat and a bakery, and the group set a breakfast meeting for May 28 at Dickerson's Playhouse.
