Memorial Day observances vary in Clermont County

Memorial Day at the Batavia Municipal Building honors Clermont veterans who died for the nation. May 30 was set in 1868, but with Ohio lawmakers adjusting observance, some Clermont communities will honor the day on May 25 while others keep May 30.

Memorial Day Parades Across Towns Honor Veterans

Union Township plans a 10 a.m parade up SR 125 to Mt. Moriah cemetery followed by services. Amelia holds a 7:30 a.m. parade starting near Pennzoil on Main Street, with coffee after at the legion hall. Batavia hosts a May 30 parade led by veterans groups, ending at Batavia Cemetery with safety rules in place. Williamsburg marks memorials with a 1:30 p.m. parade from the American Legion Hall and services at the Veterans Monument, plus morning rites at Greenbury Bloomrose and Concord Church. East Fork, Goshen, New Richmond, and Amelia schools hold Memorial Day events and related services. dates range May 25–30. Groundbreaking for a new Amelia elementary school is set for May 23 at 9:30 a.m.

County schools face more fund cuts in 1980 81

Clermonts school superintendents and press representatives outlined a grim funding outlook amid state funding and inflation cuts. Seven state bills have been introduced with more anticipated. levies may appear on ballots to balance budgets by July 1, 1981. Desember 3.6 percent cuts totaled nearly $1 million across nine Clermont districts, with West Clermont facing $291,931 plus HB 167 projected loss of $1.26 million. New Richmond faces $128,107 loss and reduced bus schedules. Williamsburg notes ongoing reductions.

Clermont officials seek federal funding for county projects

Clermont County officials narrowed a wish list for state and federal support after a May 14 Clermont Caucus with the Ohio Valley Regional Development Commission. Priorities include county water extensions, East Fork Lake treatment, juvenile facilities, courthouse improvements, and an access road to the justice complex. Other requests cover airport development, sewer units, libraries, recreation centers, and a countywide comms network.

Bethel board weighs halfway house zoning change

Bethel zoning board considers changing the Simons property at 448 N Main from residential to single family to host a Clermont Mental Health Center halfway house for eight clients. Dr Wassermann and Dr Katkin said the home would be a first in Clermont County with 24 hour live-in staff and gradual reintegration. four of five appeals board votes needed for approval.

Batavia offers annexation of 122 county acres

Batavia village solicitor Richard McCue proposed to Clermont commissioners the annexation of 122 acres of county property on SR 222 near the Service Center and the new justice center. He questioned if Ohio law allows locating the seat of justice outside the county seat. McCue said Batavia already provides fire and police protection to the site.

Sound system approved for new judge's court

Clermont County commissioners approved a $1290 sound system for a Common Pleas courtroom as Judge Ralph A. Hill prepares retirement on May 31. The vote came after a late letter from Hill and amid tensions with Gov. Rhodes' pending appointment.

McDonalds Plans Hamlets New $1 Million Restaurant Bonds

McDonald s Corporation seeks economic development bonds of 1 million dollars for a new restaurant at the northwest corner of SR 125 and SR 132 in Hamlet Batavia Township. The project aims to create about 40 to 50 jobs initially, rising to 70, with annual payroll around 225 thousand. The CIC meets monthly to advise county commissioners who grant final approval.
