Epworth League marks its seventh anniversary at the M E church with installations of new officers led by Miss Lou Baum. Morning service focuses on Prayer Meetings, with Prodigal Son series to follow in two Sundays.
Dr Sutherland former pastor of the M E church in Williamsburg now located in Wyoming preached a stirring sermon in Williamsburg on Sunday. He spoke on being sons of God and the hope of seeing him as he is, urging purification as preparation for Christ's second coming. He appeared vigorous in mind and body.
Mrs Enoch Smith swept rubbish in her yard and lit a broom who sparks set the corner of the house aflame. Neighbors dampened the blaze with water as the broom collapsed into ashes. A weathered tale ends with praise for Simmons Regulator as a spring and fall remedy and mentions W T Lee of Pendleton New Jersey.
An Italian professor cites Italy’s high murder total about 2900 yearly with 2700 convic tions, compares to the United States about 7500 murders and 100 executions, while Hungary also has high homicide figures. Batavians witnessed a street spectacle described as a burlesque new woman. A performer wore a white muslin jacket over brown jeans trousers with tan gloves and crimson powdered hair. The crowd gathered as she sang, sold corn medicine from a rear express wagon, and patrons bought cure-all claims despite the humorous disguise.
The Sixth District Democratic Congressional Committee calls a May 2 meeting at Secretary D. W. Murphy’s Lincoln Inn Court office to select two delegates and two alternates to the Chicago convention, plus a Presidential elector candidate and a candidate for Congress opposing Beth W. Brown. Committee members include J. Waters, J. Fitzhugh, M. M. Gaunce, A. B. Hough, G. W. Jack, and D. W. Murphy. Senator H. A. Tissander of Brown County is seeking a congressional race.
Dug Copas constable at Weat Union faces an Adams County grand jury indictment for aiding the negro Blatr to escape from jail. The charge has caused widespread doubt about guilt and much surprise at the indictment.
The Women’s Relief Corps of Batavia is organized with 18 charter members. Mrs Maggie Brooks installs officers including President Mary J Blanchard and Laura McMillen as senior vice. The group, adjunct to the G A R, plans Decoration Day work and bi monthly summer meetings. A Batavia–Moscow game drew crowds despite distance, with Irwin Zugg and Livengood Murphy noted in reporting. Batavia plans to open grounds on low bottom fields near Miss Kate Duckwall’s residence by the railroad.
