William J. Rust, aged about 79, longtime Batavia native and Courier subscriber now living in Mt. Carmel, spent a week in town renewing acquaintances. Born in Batavia, he recalls forty years of steady work and a large, happily married family. He hopes to live to old age and remains vigorous.

A horse attached to a two seater carriage bolted through New Richmond last Wednesday morning. Mrs. Josephine Liehardt and Mrs. George Silker were in the carriage with Albert Liehardt driving. Joseph Burgmeyer was knocked down and trampled, suffering serious injuries. Burgmeyer required about 500 stitches after being struck by hoofs and remained unconscious for half an hour. Mrs. Silker sustained a badly bruised ankle and cuts to the head while alighting. The horse was finally controlled after a long chase. the other occupants escaped injury. Burgmeyer, Mount, and Joseph Liehardt helped stop the beast and were in danger, with Burgmeyer in a dangerous condition.

Brown County News reports four men were arrested from a junkboat at Portsmouth last week for robbing B and O freight cars at Parkersburg. One member, Tarry Leonard Leonard, is son of Judge D I Leonard a Parkersburg lawyer and controversial congress candidate. He attended Virginia University at Charlottesville and earned high honors with a gold medal in oratory. After college his father mentored him but he joined bad company, faced trouble, and vanished with the gang.

Frank Shades died yesterday at 5 p m after weeks of ill health caused by overwork as a farmer. He leaves a wife and one child and was 60 years old. The funeral will be held tomorrow at 10 a m from his residence with interment in Odd Fellows' cemetery. He was a respected local farmer and citizen.
At a school board meeting last Thursday night James C. Whitney was reappointed janitor of the school building. He has now held the post four years and is praised as careful conscientious and reliable. An old soldier and popular appointment.
