Sheriff Rapp Captures Large Moonshine Still Near Batavia
Sheriff John B. Rapp with Deputy W. E. Kain David Gallagher and C. M. Long uprooted a massive moonshine operation on Nine Mile near the U B church. The still held 185 gallon capacity with a gasoline-fired boiler and eight empty barrels and 15 gallons of moonshine were seized. Operators Will Lynch and Harry Bumpride were later brought before Judge Young for trial. A prior raid in the same area yielded similar results.

Auto Found Abandoned Near Moscow Residence
A stray car with an Indiana license was found Monday morning in front of Ben Cushard's Moscow home. The desertion occurred overnight and Sheriff Rapp notified city authorities. The vehicle will be held for identification for a reasonable length of time.

Landmark Burns Mineral Springs Hotel
The old Smith Grimes hotel once a popular Adams county summer resort was destroyed by fire at about nine o clock last Wednesday night. Caretakers Mr. and Mrs. E J Raney of Columbus tended the property owned by Louise K Wagner and others of Columbus. The fate of the resort had prompted sheriff sale efforts over the past year to recover a claim by Frank Benna now living in Columbus. The fire origin is unknown. the building and contents were insured for thirty thousand dollars.

Judge Tarbell of Georgetown ruled for the Burley Tobacco Association awarding 240 dollars liquidated damages and 100 dollars attorney fees after the suit against Mr List for dumping tobacco. List testified to raising 4810 pounds in 1922 and delivering to the Loose Leaf floor at Maysville. The decision, first of its kind in Ohio, drew Brown and Clermont county growers to the courthouse. Cincinnati tops Ohio with 18.0 deaths per thousand for the week ending April 19, 1924, up from 16.9 last year, while Columbus and Cleveland show varied changes. Jacksonville, Fla., records the highest rate among cities at 28.4, and New Haven, Conn., the lowest infant rate at 18. Tacoma records the highest infant rate at 161. The 16 week 1924 rate across 68 cities is 14.1, down from 16.9 in 1923.
