A large audience attended a Masonic entertainment last Friday night at the county armory. A Cincinnati jazz band provided music until 4 a.m. The Eastern Star organized refreshments, boosting receipts with ice cream cake sandwiches and candy sold to attendees.
The government tank No 8 arrived in Batavia to tour the county for the fifth liberty loan bonds but Batavia township declined bonds. Crowds watched the tank perform dramatic feats such as climbing banks and traversing trees. The driver operates from a steel protected cockpit while the tank moves about three and a half miles per hour. It then proceeded to Williamsburg housed on a large army truck.
Batavia juniors hosted the seniors in the school auditorium for a year end social. The well lit room and class color decorations set a festive mood. A short program was presented, refreshments served, and attendees enjoyed a delightful evening.
The 58rd annual County S S convention met May 1 2 at Marathon M E church with strong turnout and engaging programs. Pastors and lay leaders from Williamsburg Felicity and New Richmond spoke as delegates were named for the Akron state gathering. County work awards went to Miami township, with next meeting set for Bethel. Officers were re-elected including Wm R Ireton and G W Burnet.
The obituary notes Mrs. Elizabeth Kettler aged 78 died at her Summerside home Monday morning. Funeral from the residence at 2 p.m. Wednesday, burial in Batavia Cemetery. She is survived as the mother of Mrs. Fred Smith of Batavia.
State Highway Department official Har wood Searsh assured Batavia that Clermont county road work outlined in 1919 would be carried through to completion. The plan includes the Ohio pike Route 6 A 12.7 miles and 10.7 miles on Milford Hillsboro and other sections with federal aid and surveys by state engineers. Bids to be opened after bond certification. contractors expected, possibly five months to finish before winter.
Charles McEldonney of the U S Ship Hancock spent several days with the Kies ter families. Miss Cassie Tone weekended with Miss Francis Nobis of Ludlow Kentucky and attended a Galli Curci concert Friday. Mrs Lou Steincord of Withiamsville hosted Mrs Bert Brad bury. Allen Latham and son left for Columbus Georgia after visiting relatives here. Emmett Ayer and family from Monterey visited Mrs Rose Ayer and son Wilbur. A E Eppert and wife of Amelia visited W B Eppert. Elijah Mattox of Tusculum visited W M Eppert. Mrs W J Tone hosted the Harmony Club of White Oak with Mesdames Cor nay Howard Hancock Hiram and Carl Kiester Bert and Clar ence Kirgan Morland Eppert John Simindin and I Capps. Wr GB part and family of Madisonville also visited. Local Misses Sadie Heil Mary Trump and Hattie Wilson spent Sunday with home folks.
Clermont county residents show strong support for Liberty Bonds with 184 subscribers totaling 217,400 in the first issue 313 subscribers and 169,260 in the second 1,905 subscribers and 575,700 in the third 4,143 subscribers and 821,800 in the fourth. The quota for this issue was 502,450 and the county earned the honor flag by surpassing it. The Fifth Loan sale closes May 10.
The Sunshine Club met at Mrs. Arthur Ruffner's home on April 30 with seven members and two visitors. The group combined April and May programs due to illness. Members read poems, discussed "The Mother That Counts" and "A True Home" and heard Miss Margaret Ruffner’s music. Mrs Daugherty organized a ten minute Easter-tide word find won by Naomi Harlow. A social lunch followed with a final motto about flowers and souls.
Secretary of State Smith last week named election board members for Clermont county. Bruce Daughters of Felicity a Republican and Frank Harvey of Bethel a Democrat join the board, with holdovers Leonard L. Harding Milford and Lee Phillips Monroe township. The board met in the auditor's office with Auditor Searls as chairman and elected E. 8. Rush clerk and Lee Phillips chief. Harding was absent due to sickness.
Thomas Garrison of Garrison Van Camp Company has leased 200 acres at Ancor and an option on cottages once built by the Government for workers. He plans farming the land and using cottages as tenant housing. Jerry Payne and others have leased small garden tracts. Government the fate of the site and soldiers stationed there remain unclear.
Clermont county mourns sons lost to World War I with a pledge to build a monument on a prominent public square. The piece urges citizens to lend at least 4.6 billion dollars to support war costs, debts, contracts, and postwar recovery.
In Columbus on May 2 Attorney General John G. Price ruled that school janitors cannot be paid for time lost when schools close due to epidemics. The ruling cites a law authorizing teacher pay for such time but finds no authority to compensate janitors. Prosecuting Attorney W. W. Beck of Columbiana County noted the opinion.
Milford high school graduates present an annual class night program Friday evening May 6 at the Family Theatre. The 1919 close will feature one act plays novel specialties and good music to entertain patrons.
Harry Campbell of Milford, who deserted his wife and eight children in 1917 and worked in Canada, was captured last Tuesday by Sheriff Swing via a decoy letter and jailed for court action. He had received a suspended sentence previously on grounds of supporting his family.
Edward Kahn, an alleged burglar, broke jail after being arrested near New Richmond for stealing eggs and cream from the Utopia wharf. Marshall Henderson and deputies recaptured him briefly before he escaped again. He owns a shanty boat on the Kentucky side and his wife had traveled to town with eggs, arousing suspicion.
In memory of Elizabeth Williams born Concord Clermont Ohio April 28 1834 died April 23 1919 aged nearly 45 wife of Beverly S. Williams and mother of David Desoto and Carrie Ellen. Describes her as devout charitable and tireless in service with verses from Proverbs. Includes thanks to friends and undertaker.
Ohio pupils are urged to form Vacation Thrift Committees in Clermont County to push War Savings Stamps sales through summer. The program offers $8,000 in prizes for top sellers and credits toward other contests. Forest Hill school leads county sales with $150.60 per pupil, under teacher Minna Ungethuem.
All members urged to attend Friday evening May 9 to confer third and fourth degrees on a class of thirty one candidates. It will be the largest class in the Grange’s history with a luncheon served afterward prepared by an all female committee noted for its excellence.
Allan Boles of Mt. Holly area sold a fine herd of beef cattle last week for about 7000 dollars. Milford’s Woodward Bros. bought the cattle. Boles recently bought a Moline tractor for his farming. Bethel native Sergt Dale South writes April 8 that he has received commission as 1st Lieutenant dating from August 16 last. Clermont county is noted as always in the forefront.

The Owensville high school commencement will be held May 17 with music by the Batavia orchestra. Dr. Wm. Dawson of Antioch College will deliver the address and is well known in the county.
A Saturday Williamsburg meeting gathered town and township representatives, village and county officials to discuss unifying two districts for better schooling and funds. Two options were considered: merge into one district or combine for high school use only, both avoiding centralization. A follow up meeting is planned for next Saturday to decide on concrete actions.
A telegram from the War Savings Department to County School Superintendent H. C. Aultman reports Clermont County leads all counties in Ohio in War Savings Stamp certificates sold through schools. Moscow Schools show per capita of 5.50 with total 167.20, and townships Tate 580 Franklin 500 Monroe 1260. Perintown schools report 125 per capita as vacation thrift committees form to continue sales.
A May 3 gathering at Raymond M. Imholte’s Mt Holly area home celebrated his return from overseas duty with a reception hosted by friends. Guests spoke of Imholte and shared experiences from the 87th Buckeye Division, with music games and luncheon shaping the evening.
A town note calls for a meeting to form committees and arrange decorations in anticipation of one of the largest crowds the town has seen for Decoration Day on May 30. It asks who will speak up and set a meeting date.
