The New York authorities tested the electric chair on a six week old calf weighing 160 pounds. With 1000 volts the calf died instantly as the switch was thrown. The test occurred as Kemmler awaited execution and obtained a respite on habeas corpus. A physician, scientists, and reporters witnessed the demonstration.
The Courier reports Prof P J Carmichael, former Loveland public school principal, arrested after a long chase ending six miles from Leroy New York. He is in U S custody in Buffalo on $2000 bond and indicted by a grand jury for misusing the mails. Authorities praise Inspector McAfee and Bearss for the case and note Carmichael’s alleged nymphomania and alleged vile conduct toward pupils.
Incendiary fires destroyed a barn and contents belonging to Mrs. David Brunk about 2 miles northeast of Monterey and a nearby Higgins barn a mile farther away. A New Richmond dispatch dated May 5 reports on a towboat row among crew members over money for tobacco. Wm J Ryan suffered a deep leg gash and facial bruising from a stabbing affray. steward Wm Brown is named as the supposed cutter. The boat proceeded to Cincinnati for aid with Ryan, while three crew members were discharged ashore with no money.
