Elizabeth Emma Huling of Clermont County is featured as the Courier’s first community correspondent. Born July 21 1891 in New Richmond she lived on a farm in Amelia, studied in Cincinnati, and worked as a bookkeeper before marrying Earl C. Huling. She has written for the Courier and is active in church PTA and band circles while caring for her ill husband and raising son George Earl.

Major Robert Cardenas to speak to Batavia Explorer Scouts

Major Robert L. Cardenas, a Wright-Patterson Air Force Base test pilot, will address Explorer Scouts at Batavia courthouse at 8 p m on May 10. He will discuss The Flying of Modern Aircraft and present a sound motion picture. He is a decorated veteran with the Air Medal, Presidential Citation, and Purple Heart for service in World War II.

Bus Trip to Coney Island via Courier Day Planned

The Courier may charter buses to Coney Island on Sunday May 14 if enough demand exists. One bus would depart Batavia and another from Amelia around 1 30 p m, returning after the fireworks. Each bus seats about 35 with some standing room. A 25 cent round trip passenger fee, Courier covers the rest, and Crosewell Bus Lines may provide service if interest is sufficient. Contact The Courier by May 9 to express interest.

Dozens of calls to Hall's Super Market in Amelia discussed an error in The Courier grocery ad offering flour at 1.19 per bag instead of 1.99. The store cited immediate proof of Courier advertising effectiveness to explain the discrepancy.

Milford Exempted Village to Sell 160000 School Bonds

Milford Exempted Village School District announced sale of bonds totaling 160000 dollars at 2.25 percent, maturing 1951 to 1970. J A White and Co of Cincinnati purchased the issue and paid a 3299 dollar premium. Bonds were authorized at a March 28 special election to fund a Milford School addition.

Revival Service at Bantam Christian Church Opens May 7

An old fashioned revival will be held at Bantam Christian Church starting at 8 p m on May 7. Special music and singing will be heard. The evangelist will be the Rev. Jones Fryman of Felicity. The pastor of the church is Bethel Dalton.

Local Minister Attends Seminary at Chillicothe

The Rev. Fred Mark pastor of Batavia Methodist Church represented Wilmington District at the First Ohio Area Counseling Seminar at Sulphur Lick Springs Hotel near Chillicothe on May 13. Bishop Hazen G. Werner presided and led case demonstrations of counseling problems ministers face.

Amelia VFW Post Plans New Home and Recreation Center

The Amelia VFW Post will begin building a new home and recreation center after raising funds through donations of concrete blocks building materials and cash. Cliff Bachelier, building committee chairman, says work will start once a suitable site in Amelia is purchased and requests landowners to contact the committee.

Brooder House Fire Causes $3,000 Loss

Approximately $3,000 loss occurred at Price Shumate on Cole Road Amelia when a two story brooder house burned during the night of April 27. A defective brooder is believed to have started the fire. Miss Etta Dennison discovered the blaze. Apple cocayey chicks were lost.

Farmer Acts as Own Lawyer in Damage Suit Trial

Luther W. Jenkins, 73, a Glen Este farmer, conducted his own defense in a damage suit from an automobile collision at Routes 123 and 132 in Warren County. The jury awarded Francis C. Reed the full $1,031.88 sought, despite Jenkins cross examining witnesses and urging simple justice.

McCowen and Hayden Victory Highlight Primary Returns

The 199 primary drew about ten percent more voters than the last. 2,464 cast votes with Republicans leading 2,161 to 1,306 Democrats. Taft led overall with 1,999 votes. McCowen defeated McElhaney for the Sixth District Congress nomination. Hayden beat Eastwood for State Representative. Countywide totals list numerous Republican and Democratic tallies for governor and other offices.
