In Bantam a blacksmith attempted suicide twice within two weeks. First he ingested laudanum and survived after a stomach pump. Last Friday he leaped into a pond hoping to drown, but a passing friend rescued him. Authorities should monitor him as he regains health and reason.
J E McKinley a Brown County teacher attracted by a wealthy widow aged 86 with ample fortune. He accepted a cash gift of 10 000 to balance their age gap and proposed marriage. He cashed 2 000 at Maysville and showed 4 000 more at Ripley. Wedding hoped for last Saturday. Emigration of teachers to Kentucky anticipated.
The Batavia school board rehires the term staff with Miss Bessie Griffith resigning. The faculty includes Geo. P. Chatterton, Della Nichols, Ella Halbisch, Lillian Robinson, Cora Grilis, Bessie Cowen, Mina Elma Townsley. An election for school director to resolve a tie between Charles Miller and J. S. Parrott is set for the 2th instant, costing about $75. legality of female voting remains unsettled.
Senator Callum criticizes the administration in a May Forum accusing Democrats of destruction and retrogression during their first year in control. He says public opinion shows emphatic disapproval and cites widespread bipartisanship against the administration’s behavior and failure to act in good faith.
Warden James, facing a near revolt, ordered Deputy Playford to stop a farewell speech to inmates. Stackhouse attacked Playford on stage, leaving a bloody nose as about 2000 convicts watched in the chapel, highlighting the warden's unfitness to command.

King’s Daughters to meet May 4 at Miss Cootl Wallek’s home. Stirling and Moore carriages advertise durability and style.
The 22nd annual M E Sunday schools convention meets in New Richmond on May 10 and 11 with Devotional exercises, addresses by Rev. W C Mitchell and others, and reports from committees. Officers include C H McNutt president and Chas Hommeyer treasurer. Dr W O Hulick now in Cincinnati.
Chris Jenike has improved streets and alleys, raising local road levels and improving conditions. Atchley, the longtime auctioneer, has died after months of illness from a broken limb and prior self harm attempt, aged about 65, leaving a widow and grown children. He was highly esteemed by friends and neighbors.
A Cincinnati bound gathering honored Sheriff Tom Teal on his 47th birthday as guests from Stonelick Owensville Tealtown and nearby places arrived by train. The day featured a hospitable feast and cheerful reminiscences as Teal enjoyed a rare moment of youth before the party concluded around 4 pm with plans to someday celebrate his 94th anniversary.
The 13th annual commencement at Batavia city hall Friday evening honored seven graduates. Valedictorian Dale K. Parrott led orations by Nina Behymer Alva B Marriott Mena W Hoerner Carrie Hannold Olive V Marriott and Alonzo Bunn. Bellstedt's orchestra provided selections as the faculty and pupils reflected on success. Senator Paxton proposed a bill to create the Paxton special school district from Miami township subdivision No. 1.
The county Soldiers' Relief committee met Monday and trimmed the summer list. Applicants seeking summer relief must file with their township committee on or before May 28. Those currently receiving aid must submit new applications.
Veterans and friends held a camp fire in Williamsburg marking the final muster of Co K since 30 years past. The event featured a formal Co K association formation with officers, rosters, singing, addresses, and memories of absent comrades. The next gathering is planned for a year hence.
Rev. Joseph Hawkins of Cincinnati will preach at Stonelick valley Baptist church on Sunday morning and evening, May 6. Hawkins served as chaplain of the Illinois Legislature last year.
Mayor Britton sentences Randolph Moorhead to five days and costs for lingering over wine. George Snell receives twenty days and costs for assault and battery in Williamsburg last week.
Gideon V. Witham, the town's namesake and oldest resident, died at his home Monday morning at age 80. He was a retired farmer and uncle by law to A. M. Dimmitt through his marriage to Julia Dimmitt, sister of the late John Dimmitt. He leaves a family and many friends.
John Nelson and Gordon Meleon of New Richmond jailed for stealing a quantity of feathers from Theodore Steelman of Nichols ville. Caught with feathers in their mouths, they face potential time in the Cincinnati workhouse as a result of the alleged theft and misconduct.
John McCammeron and his wife were approached by two masked men on their porch last Thursday evening. The intruders ordered them to raise their hands, marched them upstairs, and compelled the couple to surrender $350 they believed was in the house. South Lebanon is a town of about 600 people five miles from Lebanon.

Honsa Jenkins auditor of Clinton county visited Batavia and the Courier yesterday. He is the state's oldest auditor and already serving a fourth term. Jenkins plans to seek the Auditor of State nomination at the 1895 Republican convention. He is described as a sterling Republican and popular, agreeable gentleman.
The Batavia commencement ball Friday night drew the brightest young people from surrounding counties. M J Kain BE W Buvinger and Harry Brunaugh directed the event with Bellstedt providing superb music. The hall overflowed with charm as dawn approached and the evening's joy lingered in the morning air.
