New Treasurer Byron Ross and Deputy Francis Shields Named

Byron Ross aged 51 of Felicity becomes treasurer of Clermont County with Francis M. Shields of Williamsville as deputy after Wednesday appointment by county commissioners. Ross, a 25 year veteran in federal agricultural agencies, has a farm near Felicity and a B.S. in agriculture from Ohio State. Shields, 43, brings finance and auditing experience from Getz Jewelry, First National Bank, and Trailmobile. Bond set at 50 000 dollars. Ross assumed office Friday with possible adjustment later.

N and W Merger Proposed for May Fourteen

Norfolk and Western Railway stockholders in Clermont County will vote at their annual meeting May 14 on a plan of merger with the Virginian. If consummated, the merger would boost the railway's prospects and support local industrial growth already tied to N and W expansion.

Shopping Center Proposed as Shopping Plaza at Mt Carmel

Three Mt Carmel properties totaling about 300 by 400 feet are under option for a planned Shopping Plaza to include a grocery drug store bowling alley and variety stores. Owners are unnamed at developers' request to protect the deal from jeopardy.

Rt 74 to close for one month near Batavia

Damaged section to be repaired with $1 to correct a slide on Rt 74 near Batavia. Joseph Unger of the highway department in Middletown said road closure for four days will be necessary and weather will affect progress. The damaged segment will be removed and material replaced for stability. Frysinger Construction handles the Rt 74 relocation work.

Dr Skeen To Give Vaccinations In School

Owensville district PTA wins long fight to vaccinate North eastern school district children against smallpox. Batavia physician Dr Frederick S Skeen will supervise about 200 youngsters at the Owensville school with nurse Helen Skeen and RN Mrs Herbert Rein assisting. Bus transport will move district children. Dr James MacMillan of Milford offered help but not needed. Continued on page 12.

High Court Denies Amelia School District Withdrawal

Ohio Supreme Court rules 75 percent vote required to dissolve from West Clermont consolidation is reasonable. Groh and Lorentz lose appeal to withdraw Amelia from the district. West Clermont was created in 1956 by voters from Amelia Williamsville Tabasco and Mt Carmel Glen Este districts.

Four More Prize Winners Omitted in Easter Egg Hunt

Four Batavia merchants were omitted from the list of prize honorees for the Courier-Frank W. Weaver Post Easter Egg Hunt held Saturday March 28. The missing names are Determan's Restaurant Jim's Reliable Shor Repair Murphy's Market and Mosbacker Implement Co. The error appeared in Thursday's Courier edition.
