River Captain Dies

Funeral services for Capt. Albert J. Powell 84 retired steamboat captain on the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers were held at his Amelia home with burial at Mt. Moriah Cemetery. Powell served in the Federal Navy during the Civil War, began river work after, led Barrett Line for 20 years, then ran their Cairo Illinois steamers for two decades, retiring seven years ago. He is survived by his widow Frances E. Powell a son W C Powell Detroit and three daughters Mrs James Wasner Batavia Mrs Sanford Nickels and Mrs Luella Nagel Amelia.

Flood Relief Efforts Aid Ohio River Flood Victims

The Ohio River rose to 63.9 feet causing widespread flooding along riverfront towns in Clermont Hamilton and surrounding counties. No deaths were reported while Loveland Milford and New Richmond organized aid with County Relief Red Cross and state agencies coordinating provisions from Le Montre Manufacturing. Volunteers provided twice daily boat-assisted relief and supplies to shutins amid widespread distress.

Auto accident at Perkins hill injures Cincinnati trio

Harold Anstaett, Mildred Seizer, and Muriel Seizer from Cincinnati were riding to Batavia when their car overturned on Perkins hill. The crash left Anstaett with acid burns to face and eyes, Seizer with a broken collar bone and facial burns, and the other girl bruised. A sand pile caused the trouble. Lee Ramsey aided the victims and alerted Dr. Van Horn.

The Milford Masonic Club will inaugurate the first of a series of Bridge and Five Hundred parties at the Masonic Hall on Friday evening April 7. The arrangements committee aims to make this season’s big event with refreshments and prizes for the winners featured by the club.

Mt Carmel Grange will open at 7 30 on Saturday April 1 to host county agent H N Wilson and his picture machine. All members are asked to answer Roll Call with a homemaking or barn item. A St Patrick program on March 18 drew strong attendance despite rain. Bantam Grange held a March 22 session with humorist O O Mattox and tenor soloist Mr Callahan featuring a green contest and prize. The next meeting is set for April 12 with a promising program.

Ex-Superintendent John Collins Dies After Crash

Former Batavia public schools superintendent and Miami University professor John Edgar Collins, 61, died at St Joseph Hospital Fort Wayne Indiana from injuries after his car was struck by a Nickel Plate Railroad train in Latty Ohio. He never regained consciousness. Survived by widow and two sons. Funeral and burial in Peebles Saturday.

Batavia Citizen William W. Dennison Dies at Home

William W. Dennison, deceased Batavia resident and son of Geo and Eliza Dennison, died Friday at 6 30 am at his Wood Street home. A Clermont county bar member, he served as deputy sheriff under J R Woodlief and deputy probate judge under W W Prather. A Republican noted for his gardens, he leaves a widow, son N B Dennison and daughter Mrs C N Young. Funeral at his residence Monday at 10 80 and burial in Batavia Union Cemetery.
