Rationing of Meat Set to Start Here on March 29
Washington announced a nationwide rationing plan for meat fats oils and cheese to take effect March 29. The system allows sixteen points weekly per consumer to spend on rationed items with point values issued March 22. Expected weekly ration levels include meat 2 to 2½ pounds butter 4 4 ounces lard 4 ounces margarine 1 3 ounces cheese just under 2 ounces shortening 3 ounces. The program will also cut points for prunes raisins dried beans peas and lentils and exclude some nonrationed items. It will utilize red stamps in a new ration book and cover beef veal pork lamb mutton and variety meats canned fish cheeses fats oils and related products.
