Pint-Sized Constable of Williamsburg Ohio

A 4 foot 11 inch constable named Hiley Arwine served Williamsburg from 1896 to 1908, weighing 79 pounds at age 32. A Cincinnati dispatch compared him to James Vincent of Boonville as the smallest officers in the U S, noting Arwine’s integrity, energy and nerve and his successful conduct of arrests.

Fire Destroys Batavia Residence

A kitchen stove fire at John Guenther’s Batavia home caused over 4000 dollars in property loss. Firefighters battled attic flames under Chief Lafleur amid low water pressure. Mrs Guenther and two children were rescued to safety. The home belonged to Carl Curry, and Red Cross seeks clothing and household items for the family.

Suspect Captured by Farm Hand After Two Day Chase

Kenneth Fritz, son Otway near Portsmouth, was captured by William Piercefield on Hall Smith farm after a widespread search around Batavia. He allegedly abandoned a car at Olive Branch last Tuesday night and was seen several times before capture. Fritz was locked in a farm building and later returned to Portsmouth. Authorities said he had stowed cars in the Bainbridge area and near Portsmouth.

Goshen Sextet Invited to International Folk Music Festival

A Goshen high school girls sextet directed by Miss Christine Williams was invited to join the International Folk Music Festival at Wilmington College. The three day event began March 10, with members Ethlyn Cooper Barbara J. McHenry Betty Steele Jewel Dean Wilder Naomi Ruth Ashcraft and Velma Lois Wallace. Goshen was the only Clermont County school represented.

Clermont County Baseball League Plans 1949 Season

The Clermont County Baseball League will meet at 1 46 p m Tuesday in Batavia Court House to elect officers and plan the 1949 season. Entering teams include Amelia Francis and Son Bethel Legion Owensville Mulberry Batavia Mt Carmel Goshen Williamsburg Marathon New Richmond and Loveland VFW. Secretary Stanley Anstaett says clubs are contracting players and the season looks strong.

Williamsburg Eighth Graders Win Clermont County Title

Williamsburg emerged as champions after a 30 to 29 victory over Mt Carthel Glen Este Mounts in Milford. Branch Hill took third by beating Milford 28 to 23. Rev Ernest Rector of Milford Methodist Church presented trophies. New Richmond forfeited in the opening round.

Legion to Celebrate Anniversary with Supper

The American Legion Frank Weaver Post in Batavia hosts a 6 30 p m covered dish supper at the Armory to mark the 30th anniversary of the Legion. Commander A P Garner says a movie will be shown and an address by J T Campey of Cincinnati is planned.

Swing Band 15 Booked For Civic Meet
