Lowell Roudebush a noted scientific farmer spoke at Wilmington on his Six Months in Alaska and described surviving the il fat ed Lowery expedition from 1883. He warned of Alaska dangers and urged steadiness over rainbow chasing. Also notes a skin ailment cure and a Dean's Ointment advertisement.
M L Bryan of the London Democrat announces retirement after selling the paper to his sons C E and O M Bryan. Born in Batavia he started the Democrat in London in 1856 and grew it from a 4 page folio to a 16 page quarto. His valedictory notes he will edit briefly as a labor of love before fully retiring.
George Westlake a road improvements director held a raffle for boys with horse saddle bridle and spur as prizes. James Griffith drew envelope 13 and paid 13 cents. Fifty envelopes in each hat with one prize envelope, the left hand draw and right hand draw determined the winner. Griffith declared winner for horse gear valued as a fair prize.
Middletown city ordinance forbids dogs at market. Market Master Bolser will arrest violators. fines range from 5 to 10 dollars. The rule applies regardless of whether dogs are dressed or undressed.
Higginsport erupts in a gun battle as Mayor Halibill and John Donald senior clash with Donald Jr. in a feud blamed on an old grudge. Halibill dies next morning. Donald senior gravely wounded. Donald Jr. jailed in Georgetown on murder charges.
T J Scott, popular Milford station agent on the Little Miami road, is not reinstated despite a Milford business and passenger petition. He and family moved to Dayton Kentucky for work on the L & O road. Louis I Willenburg succeeds him. rail upgrade contracts and rail replacement underway. Howard Silcott covers Williamsburg station while O C Knight is away.

The Ohio Agricultural Bulletin reports tomato leaf blight first seen in Wooster in August and then Mt. Carmel Clermont county. Losses are 12 to 15 percent per acre for some growers, with infections spreading from Mt. Carmel to Creston, Wayne county, and Columbus area. Experiments on seed treatment show copper sulfate and hot water do not harm germination. control relies on fungicides and spraying.
Frank Shatterly of a Goshen area farm reported a fire last Saturday morning that destroyed his burn and contents. The loss is estimated at $2,000 with the cause under investigation.
The sympathy of the people is with Dr. Bailey of the M. E. church who learned of his brother’s death in East Liverpool last Saturday. He preached a powerful sermon on Sunday morning and then left to pay his last tribute to the departed relative.
Rev Silas Bennett once led the M E church here and was a respected preacher. He died at his Bellefontaine home last Thursday at about 65. A Doctor of Divinity, he was well known in the Cincinnati conference. His funeral Monday drew many parishioners and about fifty conference members.
A Friday evening benefit concert by the Second M E church group at Jamieson’s ball features music singing and recitations. Matt Barber plays violin obligato and the Batavia colored orchestra performs unique instrumentals. Admission is ten cents and proceeds aid the pastor.

A Bourbon county Kentucky tobacco crop of 23 hogsheads sold Wednesday at the Farmers and Shippers warehouse for 4347.61 dollars. The average price was 16.47 per 100 pounds with bids from leading manufacturers and dealers. Ferguson and Eldridge of Paris owned the crop grown on 18 acres and valued at about 100 dollars per acre.

George Beckley using alias George Johnson was arrested on Smoky Row by Deputy Long and Officer Troutwine. He faced a Brookville Ky charge of cutting with intent to kill and a Georgetown O charge for hiring a horse to travel to Hillsboro, later swapping horses with Pete Kilgore and Walt Trimble. Georgetown Marshal Kendall recovered him and returned him to Georgetown. He had been in Hillsboro over a week and faced a lengthy stay ahead.
William Cusburn of near Belfast was released from prison for wheat theft. He met his wife and 15 year old son at Hillsboro, their wagon overturned in a swollen stream near Belfast, drowning the wife and boy. He fled home and reported the accident next day, while citizens demand harsh action. Authorities pursue him for alleged attempted assault on his 16 year old daughter.
The case over land damages caused by excavations along the C P & V line near the station heading west was decided by arbitration and sustained by Judge Davis last Saturday. The three arbitrators were F J Roudebush Frank White and C E B Roetinger. Damages are assessed at 000 with 6 percent interest from 1893, bringing the total claim to about 000.
A large barn on Stephen Kendalls farm in Brown county burned last Wednesday night. Three horses a cow farming implements and an immense lot of corn and hay were consumed. Loss estimated at Lees 2500 with no insurance. Supposed to be the work of fire bugs.
Samuel Housh and his wife with nine children escaped a blaze near Aberdeen last Thursday leaving them destitute and homeless due to the fire damaged home.
A dated report notes a U S purchase of two Brazilian warships on Monday named the Amazoneras and Almirante Adrenali. The piece includes a quip about sailors and pronoun usage and mentions Charles Rosecranz of Winchester as one of four heirs in an estate valued at 150000 dollars tied to Germany. Papers were issued by the West Union court clerk and the legacy awaits payment into the German National Bank in Cincinnati.

Dr Arthurbolt of Youngstown faced a criminal assault case, paid a 25 dollar fine and costs, while a civil suit for 5000 dollars was filed by the victim.
A Georgetown canning factory with capital stock of 5000 dollars is incorporated. It will be operated by L. F. Walthar, Philip Polasky, F. M. Swope, A. G. Markley and C. Baums. The plant sits on the town edge near the railroad and aims to begin once fruit is ready for canning.
Adams County resident Mode Elliott of Buena Vista was badly burned Thursday night when he blew out a lamp at the chimney causing the lamp to flare. He suffered severe injuries to the eyes and doctors fear he may lose sight.
A Burlingame woman, fearing a gun pointed at her home, seized the weapon to confront a tramp on the porch, who fled after she stepped onto the piazza. In Milford, David Kugler, an 80-something Goshen pioneer and Mason, was seriously injured when his buggy overturned during a runaway horse near a lumber pile. he escaped with bruises and no broken bones as the buggy was wrecked.
J C Fryman, once jailed in Williamsburg with a young man named Snider for irregular conduct, served about half his term and was released on parole. He told the Courier he never worked before prison, learned carriage making there, and now works in Columbus, living temperately and saving money as required by parole.
The Workman law 98 AMO creates a township board of education with one director per subdistrict and April organization. Subdistricts elect two subdirectors in April, terms vary, and the director oversees elections. Subdirectors meet in April and August, with duties to elect teachers. The township board holds sessions monthly and appoints committees. Citizens urged to attend a concert at city hall Friday evening as the box sheet opens at Beck's.
