Eight County Girls Win High Scouting Marian Award

Eight Girl Scouts from Troop 363 St. Thomas More Church received the Marian Award at St. Peter in Chains Cathedral Cincinnati. Kathleen Jacobs Marie Kaiser Carolyn Laub Mary E. Vossler Rose Bohmann Judy Burske Cecilia Engelke and Jeanette Hensley completed nineteen months of preparation including religion studies a Marian Rally pilgrimage sacristy work baby-sitting and a 400 word notebook judged by a personal interview under Fr. Herman Jansen.

Oberlin senior McFarland receives Woodrow Wilson fellowship

Owensville Andrew 5S McFarland, one of 22 Oberlin College seniors, earns a Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship for 1962 63 to pursue graduate political science studies. The award covers a full year of tuition and fees plus a living allowance. McFarland is a Northeastern high school alum and son of Mr and Mrs John H McFarland of Rit 3 Batavia.

X Ray Unit Opens in Montford Kiln County Route Stop

Ed Goodwin Edenton elementary principal observed the launch. Mrs Mary Jo Allen and Mrs Dorothy Acuff prepared to enter the unit for chest X rays.

Taxable Property Across Ohio Tops 28.5 Billion in 1961

Ohio records show total taxable real estate public utility and tangible personal property valued at 28.5 billion for 1961 based on county auditors reports to State Auditor James A. Rhodes. Inside municipalities hold 20.25 trillion while outside municipal areas hold 8.32 trillion. six urban counties account for about 51 percent of taxable wealth.

Tax Bills Mailed to Most Residents With Exceptions

Most Countians received their first half tax bills with Union township homeowners and the Miami township unincorporated area as exceptions. Union bills were to be mailed Wednesday to allow work on Miami bills. The penalty deadline is March 31 and tax books stay open until April 15.

Public Hearings Set on Zoning for Tate and Washington Townships

Joseph J. Urban of the Clermont County Planning Commission announces public hearings on zoning plans for Tate and Washington townships. Tate township hearing is April 16 at 8 p.m. in Bethel at the Bethel Tate Fire Department. Washington township hearing is April 23 at 8 p.m. at the Washington firehouse. Students from Williamsburg High School earned superior ratings at the Ohio Music Educators Solo and Ensemble Contests held at the University of Cincinnati and Miami University. Madeira Man Lt Rue Leads ONG Second Rifle Platoon

Lt John Rue appointed unit commander of the Second Rifle and Weapons Platoon at ONG Batavia effective February 1. Rue replaces Lt Roger Trickler who entered active duty. Rue, married with four children, resides in Madeira and is a University of Michigan 1954 graduate employed by Procter and Gamble in sales. He has two years of active duty in the Signal Corps serving at Ft Monmouth and Camp Polk. He joined 1st Battle Group 147th Infantry in January and will also platoon lead the weapons platoon.

Survey identifies 94 shelters for county approval

Kinney Inc. completes a survey of potential fallout shelters in the county and recommends 94 existing structures be approved by the U S Army Engineer Corps. County director Copenhaver asks mayors to appoint CD directors for each subdivision to oversee shelters when equipped. Batavia township leads with 11 shelters. Knothole Meeting Set in Batavia for 1962 Season

The Clermont County Knothole League will meet next Tuesday night March 20 at 8 p.m. at the courthouse Annex in Batavia. Anstaett states final plans for the 1962 season will be made and teams must have a representative present.

Indigent Welfare Subcommittee Formed In Clermont County

The Clermont County Committee on Health and Welfare appoints Dr. Phillips F. Greene to lead a subcommittee to study the welfare emergency and propose solutions. Members include Donald Sheehan Lois Hancock and James Brown with Schumacher as ex officio. Oney warns relief funds will run out in about six weeks and a county clinic is deemed too costly.

FBI Arrests Local Woman in Forged Check Case

Moscow reports a local woman Mildred Grandon aged 49 was arrested by FBI agents for transporting forged checks across state lines. She allegedly took two checks for 77 and 8 dollars from Cincinnati to Metropolis Illinois on July 28 1960. Grandon was arraigned before US Commissioner Graham P Hunt and released on her own recognizance with a $2000 bond. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Monday.

Cancer Crusade in Clermont Names Publicity Chairman

Russell J. Speidel announced Ralph L. Clyburne of Batavia will lead news media relations for the 1962 Clermont County American Cancer Society Crusade. An office opened at 29 North Market Street Batavia with hours to be set, and six township chairmen have been chosen.
