The Goshen Democrat Benjamin Brown who weighed 300 pounds wrote to President Buchanan on January 16 1857 praising support for him. Brown describes a farm of about one hundred acres and a large family and asks for an appointment such as Superintendent of the Patent Office. The record notes no confirmed office but highlights Brown as a persistent hustler. The original letter remains on file in Washington.
The April term grand and petit jurors for the Federal court in Cincinnati were drawn last Saturday from the 6th Congress district. Names listed include William Winters Jeremiah C, Adama William B, John E Burns Henry J Oyler for petit jury and Warren, Torr, Brady, Scatterfield, Greene, Orange, Highland for grand jury. In Adams county neighbor, John Gilbert was drawn for the grand jury and S. E. Gore for the petit jury.
A newspaper note touts Scott's Emulsion for children and a remedy for hives. An ad announces a public sale on the Frank Shade farm near Batavia and Afton with stock and farming goods. Also reports the marriage of Charles Poppe and Amanda Oldenburg on February 26 1902 near Goshen.
Letter to the Clermont Courier blasts a new Clermont County directory for mislisting and omitting Civil War and Spanish War veterans. The writer notes 59 missing names across Locust Corner Amelia and New Richmond precincts, plus errors and misplacements affecting elderly residents and prominent citizens. The piece cites Bennett Behymer, J. Ricker, and others, and advertises a new county directory for sale.
Sam Runyan, longtime agent for the W. H. Baum sewing machine house in the city, is involved in a marital scandal after his wife uncovered alleged infidelity with a stranger at the Atlantic hotel. Mrs Runyan, daughter of ex-Commissioner Sapp, petitions Clermont common pleas for absolute divorce citing church exclusion, curt treatment, and repeated adultery with unnamed parties, with Miss Hamilton named as the co respondent.
Miss Louise Abbott recounts a Bethel incident from early settlement days in which Nancy Evans was accused of witchcraft by the Hildebrand sisters. After failed exorcisms and charms, a local justice of the peace staged a weight test using a Bible against a large wooden scale, declaring Evans innocent when she outweighed the Bible. The tale ends with families relocating to Brown County.
The Olive Branch lake for engines and pleasure is nearly finished. It measures 1800 by 800 feet and 20 feet deep, with winter skating and nightly overflow to renew surface. A summer bathing resort with bath houses and a hotel for 300 to 500 guests is planned, plus a power house and factories. Batavis will be served by the line with a hoped July opening. The Honee passes a new local option bill giving voters power over wet or dry questions, with 40 percent petition triggering a ballot and a two year effect.
At the March 1 special and March 3 4 regular meetings trustees approved labor and repair charges including pike labor 1500 bridge repair 200 mayor fees 2060, clerks and supplies from Stakatta Pen Co Dayton Bik Co and Webb Stationery, burial and collection fees, and several defense and justice fees. The semi annual treasury examination showed 55780.27 on hand. A proposed compromise of the John W Davis overdrawn county auditor fees was tabled after disagreement. The Davis bondsmen proposal amount was 1640.

William J Rust longtime Batavia pioneer dies at his Mt. Carmel home on Saturday March 1 1902 in his 88th year. He was a former Batavia marshal and constable and later infirmary superintendent. He married Cynthia Ann Williams and had three children two surviving Granville Teal and Lorain Krantz of Glen Este. He joined the Universalist church at 26 and remained a faithful member, a Republican and active citizen. Funeral held Monday in the Universalist church with Rev Spurrier officiating. burial in Union Cemetery. Odd Fellows conducted the rites as townspeople attended in large numbers.
T J Cazel writes from Yellow Springs Ohio February 26 1902 about living at the Methodist Home for the Aged the only such home in Ohio organized by five M E conferences. He notes a 60 room house with 50 capacity 17 residents present a 70 year average age one death in a year and welcomes visitors. He cites local amenities Antioch College six churches and upcoming electric road between Springfield and Xenia. He signs with thanks and sends annual subscription payment.
The Monday night council meeting reviewed the annexation proposal now on its third reading. After pro and con debate the ordinance was laid on the table due to unclear clause about purchasing turnpike portions within the proposed territory. A map by Mr. Babbitt was presented, and with more purchase details expected, board action may follow.
Representative Brannock introduced a bill in the House last Friday creating a fifth precinct for Miami township named Perintown. Existing precincts are Milford Mulberry Loveland and Branch Hill.
Batavia residents are invited to a Queen City Concert Company performance at city hall next Tuesday evening March 1. The lineup features Miss Leonie Benshausen, Miss Emma Brand, Miss Jessie Strauss, and Miss O U C Bensbaugen with elocution. Proceeds support the Batavia fire department. admission is 25 cents, 85 cents for reserved seats.

Built at Wyandotte, the 300 foot steel steamer features three boilers, electric lighting, extensive glass, and a 3090 passenger capacity for Toledo Detroit river and lake service.
