In Columbus last Thursday Republicans and Progressives held a joint gathering with broad attendance and cordial mood. The event buried factional hatchets, signaling improved cross party sentiment and opposition to Cox’s administration and term bid. Democratic leaders consider Harmon or defeat likely.
Last week in Wilmington the probate office suffered a damaging blaze, likely from an overheated furnace. Firemen saved valuable documents by returning them to a fire proof vault, limiting losses to furniture and supplies worth 3500, fully insured. Batavia and Clermont records also faced threats, with Clermont lacking vault protection after a watchman was dismissed by the treasurer last September. Public officials are urged to provide adequate protection.
Daniel D. Marsh of Owensville files his will for probate. Funeral expenses and debts are paid first. The widow inherits the estate with right to dispose of it, then to be divided among Alfred T. Marsh Hanson H. Marsh and Anna P. Dietz after the widow's death. Hanson H. Marsh named executor without bond. Will witnessed by Prank J. and J. L. Favret.
Henry Simes of Stone Lick Township was jailed last Monday on charges of shooting with intent to kill his tenant. He may face additional charges for concealed weapons with possible penitentiary confinement.
Lowell Roudebush writes from Cambridge Maryland on February 24 1914 describing Maryland’s geography economy and history. He notes oyster industry east shore and West Maryland farming including tomatoes peaches muskmelons and strawberries and mentions Fort McHenry and Corbin and the Whittier reference Barbara Fritchie.

The 1913 census shows 236833 dogs listed for taxation with males about six to one female. Total tax collected amounted to 265774 dollars. The number of dogs not paid on is not provided but is estimated to be quite large.
Henry McMullen of Goshen township died at the state penitentiary on Monday. He had been sent last fall from this county on a charge of incest with a sentence of one to twenty years.
Jas Proud will hold a public auction at his residence two miles west of Nicholsville and two miles east of Lindale on Tuesday March 10 starting at 10 a m. Items include a head of fine Jersey cattle horses wagons farm implements and household goods.
Thomas H. Kain once a Batavia figure and Cincinnati stroke survivor died last Saturday at his sister Mrs. Will J. Moore’s home in Jacksonville Illinois after being moved from Cincinnati. He was a popular local figure and a favorite among his comrades with whom he served while in Batavia the Baum home was his stopping place.
The executive committee of the County Federation of Woman's Clubs met at Mrs W FE Kain's Batavia home last week. They arranged the program for the Federation meeting to be held at Amelia around June 11 1914. The program will be published later. The meetings bring pleasure and profit to attending club members.
On Saturday March 24 a civil service examination will be held in Newport Kentucky to certify candidates for the fourth class postmaster vacancy at Moscow Ohio and possible other openings. The Moscow office salary last year was 819 dollars and 37 cents. Applications must be from the Moscow territory and filed seven days before the exam with the commission in Washington DC.
Mrs Mary Harding Cox former wife of Gov Cox wed attorney Richard H Lee in Cleveland last week. Her alimony from James M Cox remains 200 dollars monthly until 1922 and 75 dollars for her son until 1916. The note hints at a probate judge’s conflict over sentencing and remission in the case.
Jas W Kellum of Amelia now Tucson with hotel business joins J B Ryland Sam Murray of Cincinnati and J W Wheeler on a Santa Ritas hunting trip. They bagged seven wild hogs, Jim reports the successful outing with friendly boasting.
Mrs. Harry Dennis celebrated her birthday anniversary last Friday with a small gathering at her home. Attendees included W. O. Hulick and wife, Sidney Teasdale and family, Mrs. J. R. McMillen of Cincinnati, and Mrs. Fannie Hulick with two daughters. The day was pleasant and many beautiful presents were received.
Miss Elsie Schobert of Afton, daughter of Mrs. Geo Schobert, who attends Batavia schools and boards with Mrs. Jennie Corbin, broke a small ankle bone last Thursday while coasting down McMillen hill after striking a bale on the incline. This was the only accident recorded.
The State of Ohio vs W E Hare and Davis of Brown county indictments for misconduct in office will proceed to trial. Defense sought dismissal citing five consecutive terms without trial. Judge Newby confirms the cases will be heard in April.
At the Batavia county commissioners meeting last Monday bids for medical services at the county infirmary and jail were opened. Dr M B Griffith of Batavia received both contracts for the year. jail bid is 15 dollars and infirmary bid is 60 dollars.
The post office department bans babies from parcel post in the future. No living beings are admitted to the mail except the queen bee, which may pass through unmolested.
On Sunday February 2 percent a surprise dinner was given at the home of Henry Cobb near Williams burg. Guests included Samuel Cobb and wife and children George Inez Harry Parnell and wife Otis Walker and daughter Mildred, Mrs Williams, G H Parnell, Mia Brown and daughter Mabel, and Roy and John Cobb.
