Boy Wounded in Chest During Playground Shooting

Gary Kearsey 16 of Mt. Washington was shot in the chest by a .38 revolver while playing with Don Ellerhorst 16 and Norman Fisher 17 at Don’s home on Clough Pike. Gary was reported in good condition at Our Lady of Mercy Hospital after the incident on Friday. The guns belonged to Don’s brother Frank and were allegedly unloaded when the shooting occurred. Sheriff Dericks found Gary on the kitchen floor. Don’s mother and step-father were away at the time.

In Clermont County at end of 1954, 1,170 retired workers received 67,920 monthly payments, with 1,037 dependents getting 37,941 monthly. Changes from 1954 amendments raise earnings credits and extend coverage, boosting future benefits. 345 workers had dependents, 429 children received 15,214 monthly, and 165 widows and dependent parents shared 7,480 monthly. National trend shows 6,886,480 beneficiaries end of 1954, with pay from the Old Age and Survivors Insurance Trust Fund. Cincinnati office at 810 Walnut Street serves Batavia.

Club To Finalize Homecoming Plans In Williamsburg

The Williamsburg Garden Club meets July 5 at 2 00 pm in the Methodist Church with Mrs James M Coyle presiding. Final plans for the annual homecoming include awards for outdoor barbecue a parade float and a booth on the homecoming grounds. Papers feature Growing Hybrid Clematis by Mrs J Kermit Smith and Growing Perennial by Mrs Jerome Jackson. Hostesses are Mrs William Livengood and Mrs Wm Young.

Farmer Injured After Car Hits Tractor Near Milford

Linus Berger 61 of Route 1 Milford was in fair condition at Our Lady of Mercy Hospital after a car rear ended a wagon towed by his tractor at the State Routes 50 and 222 junction. Eugene Aymett 20 of Route 1 Milford was cited for reckless operation and fined 50 plus costs after arraignment before Batavia Mayor J F Paschal. Aymett had another crash on April 26 when his car rolled over on Route 50 near Perintown.

Voters Set Referendum On Wheat Quotas This Saturday

Ohio wheat growers eligible to vote in the June 25 referendum on quotas determine whether quotas stay for farms with more than 15 acres. Two thirds approval keeps quotas and penalties. a rejection ends quotas and reduces price support.

Mrs. Craig Named To High Office In Ohio Garden Unit

Mrs. W. A. Craig, president of the Goshen Garden Club, was named regional director of District 4 for the Ohio Association of Garden Clubs. She also serves as corresponding secretary of the Clermont County Federation of Garden Clubs and an accredited judge for the state association. She will begin her duties October 1. The Goshen club called the selection an honor for its member.

Surveying Begins For 4 Lane Road In Hamilton County

Surveying starts for a new four lane highway portion about 800 feet south of 125 from Tabasco to Williamsville. The straightway will remove dangerous curves and hills that have caused several accidents. The road will become a four lane facility from Am to Hamilton County.

Profane Language Lands Man In Jail

Ray Shannon of Hopper Hill Road was fined $50 and sentenced to 30 days in jail by Justice Nellie Mattox Amelia for disorderly conduct and intoxication. Deputy Frank Schwemberger arrested Shannon after he allegedly used profane language while speaking to residents and was found intoxicated sleeping in a ditch with a small boy nearby.

Catholic Council and State Meeting Dominate June Events

Clermont County delegates joined the Ohio State Township Trustees and Clerks Association midsummer convention June 16 to 18 at the Biltmore Hotel Dayton to push for Wheeler Bill amendment and clerk pay increases. The Senate approved the pay rise. the governor signed it. A petition by 200 members blocked Wheeler Bill amendment, arguing it would strip local government from townships.

Methodists Offer New Church Hours Batavia

The First Methodist Church of Batavia announces a summer July August Sunday schedule. Sunday school for children ends at 10:30 a m and worship runs 9 to 10. Adult and youth classes meet 10:00 10:30 a m. Rev Wes Clarke says the plan helps families attend both worship and classes and enjoy lunch and outings. First Sunday with the schedule is July 3.

EUB Pastor Receives Farewell at Batavia Church

The YME Sunday school class held a farewell supper for Rev. and Mrs. G. W. Duckwall as they depart Batavia for a new post in Millville Ohio. Mrs. Duckwall could not attend due to a major operation and is recovering at her son Marion Duckwall’s home in West Chester Ohio. Their two daughters and families attended. Seventy three members and families were served. The couple received an illuminated Last Supper picture for their service to the class and the church nursery.

St John’s Day Observed by Amelia Masonic Order

St John’s Day will be observed by the Amelia Masonic Order next Sunday June 26 at the morning service of the Amelia Methodist Church. The Reverend Forest Moon was reappointed by the Ohio Conference for another year of ministry at the Amelia Methodist Church.
