Clermont county statistics for a year beginning April 1805 show 20 violent deaths including 19 men and 1 woman. Five men died by accident or negligence while four women died from other violent causes. In the same period, 281,817 gallons of milk and 672,928 pounds of butter were produced and shipped from Clermont county among the townships.
Mrs. Burdgall, mother of mixed white and colored children, left Bata and traveled to Cincinnati with a charity pass to New Richmond. She reportedly boarded a boat with a policeman, evaded pursuit, and left her colored infant with a caregiver. The Courier’s earlier claim about her clinging to her children is disputed.
Otter Palmer of Cincinnati formerly Milford wed Anna C Myer of Philadelphia last week. George Ludwig married Lulu Snider in Covington. Michael Gallway wed Mary Fitzimmons at St Andrews church last week. Preston I Manning and Mary K Shearman married at the bride's mother's home Tuesday. Dr Manning of Mulberry noted. The Milford young men and women look toward peace and prosperity.
The 1896 wheat crop measured 49,276 bushels from 21,600 acres. In 1905 it reached 216,602 bushels from 28,117 acres. For 1807, sown acreage stands at 15,579. Acreage trails the peak, but experts expect a strong yield again despite past cinch bug problems and weather impacts.
Frank Titus’s fine shepherd dog went mad last week and was promptly killed. It is not known if the dog bit other animals. Distemper is prevalent among dogs. watch animals with care. Three grain quinine capsules three times daily followed by small doses of cad for oil, is suggested as a remedy for the temper.
Peter Apple’s residence and barn were burned last Thursday with unknown fire origin. Loss estimated at $1,000 and insurance at $1,100. Brown County Democrats convened in Georgetown last Saturday nominating a fair ticket except for treasurer. Nominees for representative include L. B. Stivers and others. treasurer contest ends with voter decision after ballots and a wait for the people’s choice.
Commissioners met with a full board to review Auditor John W. Davis's letter denying a tax refunder for the Pittsburg, Cincinnati, Chicago & St Louis Railway. Davis cited the 1895 error where assessments were charged to Miami township instead of Branch Hill school district, noting taxes were voluntarily paid and the board declined to refund any amount.
A paper wheel assembled in Washington last week carried signatures of 6,000,000 American freemen petitioning Congress to recognize Cuba. The coil, circulated for about six months, left fragments across Clermont county, with the local copy filled in about two days.
Two strangers posing as government detectives tried to extort 25 dollars from a farmer near Akron after selling him cider. A neighbor’s arrival frightened them away, ending the incident. Also, the Tuxedo ladies band from Cincinnati plans a southern Clermont and Brown county tour with dates in Amelia Georgetown Bethel Felicity and New Richmond from June 22 to June 26.

Miss Hattie Lattimer of this county visits Niagara Falls and describes the new water power tunnel near the falls. The tunnel 200 feet beneath the town will develop 100000 horsepower, with a brick lining and a canal connecting the river to the tunnel. Tourists can now ride the Gorge electric railway along the gorge for 60 cents round trip.
The sixth Epworth League district convention in Lebanon drew wide interest with about fifty numbers on the program. Clergymen and members from Clermont Goshen Williamsburg Milford Batavia New Richland and Marathon contributed, with officers listed for Aberdeen Lebanon Georgetown and surrounding areas. A dispatch from Cincinnati to Milford about a lynching mob led a Enquirer reporter to Batavia. He found only quiet streets and cold air, failed to lunch or drink, and left town with a broken assignment and a cold. The piece notes Batavia has never formed a mob habit.
Brown and Robinson of Company Q C P W regiment built fortifications above town and drank commissary whisky causing a disturbance. They were arrested and held in guard house then sent to headquarters for conduct prejudicial to good order. Brown fined 250 dollars. A humorous tale recounts Judge Hulick’s family avoiding coffee after a string of mishaps. Tom Halick falls from a colt while fetching coffee, tea replaces breakfast, and a separate coffee package bursts on arrival, leaving tea for dinner as the grocer wagon looms.
Fifty wheelers left Boston yesterday for the Adams county caves. The party, mostly ladies from Batavia including Mrs A J McNair Miss Mamie Teal Edna Tate Cecile Hulick and Nellie Breeding, moves two by two led by Dr Mitchell. An army wagon and ambulance carry tents provisions cots bandages hospital supplies and snake bite ammonia. They expect to return Saturday night. Mr E M Bell and Miss Vesta Bishop drive over in a carriage. Rev Bell will not start until Thursday morning.
An Irish laborer aged about 50 working around the railroad was ejected from a down freight train near Cincinnati as it pulled away. He suffered a dislocated shoulder and a broken rib, received town aid overnight, and was to be admitted to Betts Street Hospital. He plans to sue the railroad for damages.
An elderly man, once a P and W employee, was thrust from a moving train by a brakeman on Monday night while seeking work. The incident, said to be the brakeman's action and not the conductor's, may draw liability on the company for the injuries. Hood's Sarsaparilla advert claims follow in the text.
Swing and McDonald attorneys file suit in Clermont common pleas to break Katherine Duckwall's will to her father W. W. Duckwall. The case hinges on priority of inheritance and debts tied to 1885 assignments and the Gatch family claim. Duckwall, a Milford salesman, faced prior liabilities from a railroad venture.
At a regular county meeting forty bonds were signed by the auditor and board and turned over to Christian Walsh their purchaser at a premium of two to one. Additions to free turnpikes for 1897 include various county routes and bridge work with listed miles and cost figures. The report of the engineer for Stonelick improvement was confirmed.
A Batavia meeting of Clermont ers elected nine delegates and nine alternates to attend the Toledo convention on June 22 and 23. J R Hicks chaired the gathering, Court B Vandervort was elected chairman, and Captain William Fagley served as secretary. Delegates named include Milton Gaich J M Crane Geo L Hines R W C Gregg C B Vanderwort C H Blanchard E W Howe R L Johnson John Holmes. Alternates listed are M J W Holter Zed South B J Ricker J S Hulick Geo W Temple Fred Zimmerman John Ayers Clarence Ulrey and John Rowan.
Monday marked Flag Day with June 14 as the birthday of the flag. Early designs featured five silver stars on a blue field and 13 stripes. The flag’s evolution from a red petticoat and blue shirt to today’s blaze of color is noted, though local citizens largely did not display it publicly.

Charles Copus, a fruit grower from Adams County, reports severe losses after an apparent act by an enmity driven individual. He demands severe punishment, stating the culprit should be flogged to death and the destroyed trees removed.
A vandal struck Blanchester last week entering the engine room of the fire department and severing about 350 feet of hose rendering it useless. The act prompts heightened vigilance among residents to prevent further fires and ensure safety.
The central and executive Highland committee resolved their dispute last week and set the party convention for June 12, the date previously fixed by the central committee. Calm returns to Highland's mountainous region.
On Saturday the Masonic fraternity of New Richmond will confer the degree of M. M. on four candidates in Buckeye lodge. Yateman from Cincinnati will assist and may Masone from other points attend. A superb banquet will be served at the Springer House.

The Batavia hunting and fishing club met in Joseph I Beck's pharmacy on Thursday evening to reorganize. Attendees included William Bannister A I Cowen James Brown Max Moore Frank Kuauer Daniel Hamilton and others. A resolution set October first as the outing start date for a two week trip. Elected were James L Brown president Joseph Beck treasurer A T Cowen secretary and Max Moore commissary.
Court closes its recess next Monday with several new filings listed. Ruehle & Dyer vs 8 T Wipalns et al fore close. J R R Woodlief, administrator of N Gateh, vs William W Duckwall and 23 others, construction of will. Martha A Usher vs Marion Hutchinson, money amount claimed 120.06.
A Ventura California commencement program lists Hugh McCaskey Love among graduates and notes his relation to Dr. McCaskey, a former local physician. The item poetically remarks on time passing, mentioning Mrs Love as grandmother to future generations.
