Clermont Boy Scouts Hold Largest Camporal in County

Despite heavy rains 170 Scouts from over Cler mont County attended the two day Camporal at Kahle Farm near Batavia. Twelve troops with twenty one Patrols were present representing Loveland Milford Williamsburg Goshen Batavia Mulberry Amelia Williamsville Mt Carmel Miami ville and Owensville. Sixteen Scout Executives said the event exceeded double any prior Camporal in the county with a large campfire and patrol exhibits followed by talks from executives.

Egg Market to Open June 25 in Milford Ohio

The Ohio Valley Egg Cooperative Inc announces its official opening on June 25. Harold Koker, president, says trucks begin pickups on that day across a 30 county area with multiple routes. There are 850 paid members, 750 in Ohio and 100 in Indiana, led by Highland County with 160 members.

Arrival of Tay steamer Reports 60 Passengers

Gazette item notes Tay steamer from St Thomas bringing upwards of 60 passengers. It records sickness at Demerara and reports Lieut Bagot dead. Also mentions the Senator with 242 recaptured and the Lord Hungerford with 350 Coolies from India at Demerara.

Electric operation to replace steam on railroads

The Courier notes that all railroads will eventually be run electrically. It predicts initial changes on busy suburban lines with frequent trains, then gradual extension to full lines, fostering a new generation of railroad officers more open to electric systems.

Storm Causes Extensive Damage Across County

A violent wind rain and hail storm last Sunday evening damaged crops and repaired lines in the northern part of the county. Early potatoes benefited from rain while corn wheat and rye were flattened but expected to recover. Barn roofs near Newtown were blown off but no serious injuries or livestock losses were recorded.

Court disposes of robbery case from 1943

Walter Fitzpatrick, 24, pleaded guilty after delays and is now jailed in the State Penitentiary. The 1943 Milford Family Theater robbery involved accomplices John Liber, Robert Turner, and Bernard Doerflein. Judge Harry Britton overruled a motion for a new trial and sentenced Fitzpatrick after he had been held in Clermont County Jail. Fitzpatrick has a wife and a 4 year old son in Cincinnati.

Batavia Garden Club Plans June Meeting at Mrs Young's

The Batavia Garden Club will meet June 18 at the home of Mrs Clarence Young. A Civic Project discussion led by Mrs Hoes Nichols and the Civic Committee will follow. Garden corsages will be arranged and Mrs Clarence Young serves as hostess.

Clermont County political action helped pass the Daniels-Cramer educational bill. John Hayden, Clermont County representative, aided by House floor speeches and committee work, earning praise from the Ohio Educational Association for advancing school funding.

Williamsburg native earns Army second lieutenant rank

John Elton Varney of Williamsburg Ohio was commissioned a second lieutenant after completing Officer Candidate Course at The Infantry School Fort Benning Georgia. He served since August 11 1944. prior assignments included LT RTC Ft McClellan Alabama and private rank. Varney is a Williamsburg High School graduate and basketball team member.

Clermont Sportsmen announce county fishing contest rules

Clermont Sportsmen Inc has announced the annual fishing contest with bass and catfish as targets. The event runs to Nov 15 with first prizes of a $15 and $10 merchandise order for bass and catfish respectively, awarded at the Thanksgiving dance at Lakeview near Amelia. Second place earns honorary club membership. weighers are Edgar Anstaett and Fred Winter. Open to the public, fish must be from Clermont streams and caught with pole and line. A recent Lakeview dance netted over $700, aiding debt reduction on the East Fork clubhouse near Batavia.

Forty Hours Devotions At Trinity Church Batavia

The Methodist Guild holds devotion services this week at Holly Trinity church Batavia with an 8 30 oclock Mass on Friday. A closing procession is planned at 8 oclock Sunday with more than twenty priests from neighboring parishes assisting.

Batavia District reports $167,500 in war bond sales against a $143,000 quota with two weeks left in the drive. Despite statewide lag, Batavia anticipates nearing double its target as solicitors finalize reports and push to boost totals.

Cincinnati area OPA enforcement targets poultry price violations and stock sales. Clermont County board reports farmers selling poultry by head violate rules unless for breeding or egg laying, with certificate on file. Egg ceiling prices rise June 14 for Grade A and ungraded eggs, retail cartons set at 53c and 46c, uncartoned 2c lower. A Batavia meeting at Mrs. Bessie Moeschel's home chose a new scout leader and officers. Marilyn Iles was named president and Mary Ann Moeschel as vice president, with Ruth Ann Smith secretary, Mary Catherine Binkley treasurer, and Lois Joan Tucker news reporter. The group discussed fair projects and a nature exhibition, and $10 from poppy sales was noted.

Walter C. Cox, probate genealogist, searches for heirs of Ida Soderlynd also known as Lind Lynd and her uncle John Odling, emigrants from Sweden who settled around 1890 in a Batavia. The hunt spans Batavias in Illinois Iowa Michigan New York Ohio and Wisconsin with possible lives of Ida or Odling unlikely and not confirmed.

18 Clermont farms to stock ponds with fish

David V. Fette says 18 farms in Clermont County will stock 20 fertilized ponds totaling 13.5 acres with bass and bream. The plan, organized with the U S Department of the Interior and the Soil Conservation District, aims for pan sized bream and one pound bass within a year. Farmers Bulletin No 1938 provides details.
