Rain fell last Thursday night reviving dry parched earth across the region. Crops suffered from drought with fruit like cherries and apples showing stress while wheat oats and tobacco faced damage. rain brought relief enabling safety for stored tobacco and new growth for pastures and meadows. Farmers report early potatoes and peas and express hope the moisture arrives in time for planting and growth.
A quiet June 4, 1914 home wedding at W. E. Montgomery's residence in Bethel joined Ida Bell Montgomery and Joe Liggett of Ripley. The service at 4 p.m. featured Lohengrin on piano, a white silk crepe de chine dress, a brief pastor’s sermon by Rev. N. Young, and a reception with gifts. Afterward guests sent the couple off with rice as they departed for Ripley aboard the 6:30 train.
On June 6 1914 Oscar Apple of Marathon wed Miss Lelia Johnson daughter of Rev R A M Johnson Felicity. Rev Burdeall officiated at the M E parsonage in the presence of witnesses including Harriet Radcliff Wilma Brown and Mrs Burdsall. A second ceremony followed for Roy Phillips and Edith Kestel of Williamsburg at the parsonage with their friends as witnesses. The Apple Johnson party later returned to Williamsburg and the Phillips couple to the Radcliff farm near Marathon.
The 5th annual O. B. & O. Home ex pupil association reunion will be held at the Xenia home July 7 8 and 9 with Harry Burkett of Fremont Ohio president announcing the event. Many ex pupils live in Clermont County.
The township and special school district presidents meet at Batavia court house on Saturday June 13 to choose a five member county board of education. They must later select a county superintendent from among county school examiners. Emphasis on qualified, nonpartisan selections.
About 150 Batavia school children were driven to the Cincinnati Zoo by local car owners. The 23 decorated autos drew crowds as youngsters, many visiting the zoo for the first time, enjoyed lunch on the grass and rides on the elephant and merry go round.
Mrs Maude Patchell Drake, 20, daughter of E W Patchell, wife of Ross Drake, died suddenly at her parents home in Stonelick last Friday. She had been ill but not thought dangerous. The couple lived in Louisville where she planned to start June 1. Cause of death K rights disease. She leaves husband and one child. Burial will be at Milford on Monday. Local friends mourn the loss of a young woman known to the community.
Monroe Wiseman, at the zoo with children, started his car believing it in neutral. The spark lit gasoline and the auto leaped forward, hitting a sapling and a wall before stopping. He escaped serious harm. a similar accident killed James Gibboney last summer in Adams County. Be sure the car is in neutral before cranking.
State health board representatives will conduct a state wide inspection of municipalities to determine sanitary conditions and recommend changes. Typhoid fever and diphtheria have already appeared in a few points in the state.
Cincinnati Enquirer reports complete Iowa primary returns show the Progressive Bull Moose party fading fast with under 8 000 votes across 99 counties. Republican turnout around 140 000 suggests Moose support near six percent of GOP votes and a much smaller impact in November.
The Batavia Presbyterian church hosted a quiet wedding on June 6 1914 as Rev Luke Davis and Ruth Moreton both of Moscow were united in marriage by Rev J D Darling of Hartwell. The ceremony featured flowers music and organ played by Mrs Grace McDonald. The bride daughter of D B Moreton is praised for her sterling character. A small number of witnesses attended and congratulations are extended.
The new law requires only properties with changed values to appear in the upcoming appraisement book. Lowered or raised valuations will be listed. dissatisfied owners may review county appraisals and push for adjustments by citing undervalued lands. The tax duplicate cannot be reduced and full county publication for inspection is implied.
State Highway Department will start over 4 million dollars in contracts on July 1. James R. Marker says 60 contracts span 2 counties with broader activity planned in most counties by summer’s end. The program covers about 20 miles and requires more inspectors and supervisors. Clermont county contracts must be advertised and sold before work starts as public interest grows.
Clara Titus recounts Clermont county’s early formation and settlement. The narrative covers the 1799 territorial legislature, the proposed county name Henry, the 1800 Clermont proclamation, and notes on Mound Builder artifacts and Tecumseh era events. It follows Ezekiel Dimmitt and James Gest drilling into a pioneer home near Batavia, describing their land purchase, cabin life, and the dangers faced by Mrs. Dimmitt and the settlers.
In Marathon on June 2 Calvin Wells aged 10 was killed by a revolver shot fired by Willie Powers 16 while turtle hunting near Burd Sall Chapel. Wells stepped between the shooter and a turtle and was struck in the heart. Powers' brother fired a second shot thinking the turtle alive. Funeral held Thursday at Bloom Rose.
Mrs 0 W Seyler and her son Harold visited relatives in Amelia Sunday. The notice mentions a household remedy from Dr Thomas for aches burns and bruises available at local drug stores.
Notice to candidates advises that nominating petitions for county offices and precinct central committeeman must be filed by June 11. Each petition requires two percent of party votes, sworn statements, and a candidate declaration of acceptance. Republicans urged to circulate for township committeeman and select engaged individuals for the role.
State Board of Health opposes a 5000 strong corn boys camp in Columbus during the State fair due to health risks and potential disease. Adjutant General Wood cites possible war with Mexico and National Guard needs, leaving tents and supplies unavailable. Agricultural Commission cannot proceed without health approval and Guard support.
A clock in St Petersburg is described as the most wonderful in the world with 95 faces. It shows global time at 80 locations and tracks solar movement, lunar phases, zodiac signs, star transits, and multiple calendars. It took two years to assemble. The note also mentions summer boarders flocking to the countryside due to hot weather in Batavia.
The Milford High School graduation held in Milford Town Hall on Thursday evening June 4, 1914 drew a large crowd despite threatening weather. Twenty two graduates received diplomas as Col Geo W Bain of Lexington Ky delivered the address If I Could Live Life Over. The Milford orchestra provided music and Dr C J Spence presented diplomas.
A Kentucky family mourns as an 11 year old dies four days after a June 1 lightning strike at Leopold barn that killed his 18 year old brother. The father also reports numbness on one side from the shock. The two boys were buried together last Sunday.
The M E Church will observe Flag Day next Sabbath with patriotic songs and a service. Each person is asked to wear a flag at all services. The church will be decorated with flags and day appropriate flowers. FE Burdaall, pastor.
The attorney general’s ruling to the Tax Commission Friday states that no person acting as deputy tax official may hold another state local county or city government post. The decision narrows dual service possibilities and clarifies eligibility under state law.
At Hillsboro the state examiner HB K Parrott is examining Highland county records this week and expects to finish in about a week. He is assisted by George Thompson of Chillicothe.
