Traffic moves daily through fords near the foundry after Batavia bridge closed. Bids for lumber for the temporary bridge opened at Columbus. Pringle Construction Company to handle fill piledriving and bridge erection. state supplies lumber.
The Ladies' Aid of the Summer Street M. E. church hosts a Quilt Exhibition at the Mt. Carmel Presbyterian Church on Saturday June 10. The public may vote on quilts. Admission is 10 cents with light refreshments sold.
Mrs Lillian Messer and daughter Mrs Pribble and Mrs Shinkle of Batavia with Chas Watson kin to Felicity funeral suffer injuries in a head on crash with Carl Bissantz near the Boles residence south of Batavia on Saturday at 2 p m. Mr Pribble receives jaw injuries and loose teeth. Mrs Shinkle sustains rib and back injuries. Mr Messer and baby escape with minor injuries. Bissantz shaken. both cars damaged.
Plans for reorganizing Scout work in Clermont county will be discussed at a meeting of all interested at Amelia I C C F hall Friday night. J B Hamilton Clermont Scout Commissioner will be in charge. The staging of a county wide field meet will be discussed.
The Clermont County Federation of Women’s Clubs held its Milford meeting last Thursday with large attendance. Mrs. E. C. Ely of Batavia presided. The program was well received and enjoyed. The meeting will be held in Williamsburg next year.
Milk Producers Union will hold an important meeting at the Court House in Batavia on Friday evening June 9 at 8 p.m. Full attendance is desired. Batavia Creamery resumed operations last Thursday amid strong demand for output. Ice cream department to open later. plant repaired repainted and in first class condition. Batavia rode a 17 hit attack to a 13 3 win over Neville as Garner Kinner South and Jacobs each had six hits while Miller allowed six Neville hits. Williamsville beat Amelia 9 5 to stay in second place. Other scores include Laurel 16 Bethel U N R Tramps 12 Nobis 4 Williamsburg 5 N R Merchants 2. Next Sunday June 11 Batavia hosts New Richmond Merchants with a strong lineup from last year’s Tommy Griffith League.

County commissioners approved a lengthy list of expenditures on May 29 including labor, materials, and services. Items cover gravel stone, asphalt, tires, vaccine, inspections, auto hire, groceries, stamps, and various co operative purchases across townships Batavia, Williamsburg, Milford and Col. B. The document enumerates names such as Abbott, Aiken, Atchley, Beck, Bethymer, Croswell, Crawford, Cooper, Frey, Gaskins, Hodge, Holland, Kelch, Ketchum, Lipps, Manning, McAfee, Patterson, Price, Rush, Singler, Smith, and Wright among others.
The Odd Fellows of Mt Orab and vicinity will hold decoration services next Sunday at 2 p m with Hon Clarence J Brown of Blan chester as speaker. After the address the assembly will march to the cemetery and decorate the graves of their deceased brothers inviting all Odd Fellows and Rebekahs.
Memorial services will be held by the Odd Fellows Knights of Pythias and Junior Order and Auxiliaries of Williamsburg on Sunday. They meet at the K of P hall at 1:30 pm and march to the cemetery with a band leading the procession. Public invited.
Carnival Batavia schedules another event this year under American Legion auspices. Main Street will host attractions and activities as a scene of pleasure and entertainment.
The State Highway Department purchased land west of Batavia near the Cappell farm on Route 74 to build a brick 77 by 62 feet maintenance shop. The complex will include a front two story section, rear storage, driveways, water, and utilities with Frank Galbreath directing plans for a permanent headquarters.
Clermont Butler Hamilton and Warren counties arrange a cooperative excursion by special train to Chicago. Adults pay 10.45 dollars and children under 12 7.10 dollars, with many locals already signaling intent to go. See H. N. Wilson, Batavia, for details. Announcement of the forthcoming marriage of Miss Ann Wyatt of New Richmond and Ralph Kain of Batavia. The couple will wed July 1 at the Wyatt family home in New Richmond after the Saturday announcement at the home of Mr. and Mrs. George W. Wyatt.
The notice outlines the election on November 7 with no precinct committeemen. It lists township officers three trustees clerk constable and justice of peace plus three county school board members. Village and township petitions require signatures in ink or indelible pencil with a September 7 filing deadline and affidavits by petition circulators. Any 21-year-old by election day may sign. E. E. A birthday party for Jack Ireton, tenth, was hosted June 2 at the home of Dr and Mrs F A Ireton in Bethel. Guests from Batavia and local families enjoyed games, magic, contests, and a two course luncheon after gift opening.
Last Saturday Edgar and Elmer Kinner and other Batavia ball players rode home from Amelia. Near the Red Bridge Elmer, 15, tried to pass a moving car and fell in the roadway. The car dragged him for a distance, causing severe bruises but no broken bones. He is recovering well.
Memorial service for the K Ps Pythian Sisters IOOF and Daughters of America will be held at the K of P ball Bethel on Sunday at 2 pm. Rev Ludwick of Batavia will deliver the address.
One half million forest trees will be planted in Ohio this spring by future farmers and others who ordered their trees via high school vocational agriculture departments. F. W. Dean, Extension Forester, says two and three year seedlings, mostly evergreens, are distributed as 1000 trees per student, enough to plant about one acre when spaced six feet apart. Students pay only transportation costs. The program demonstrates how idle land can be put to good use and help reduce agricultural surplus by growing profitable products.
The Courier reports a new three span concrete reinforced bridge over the East Fork on Route 74 to replace the present closed crossing. It will have two piers, broad roadway, and sidewalks on both sides, with the span located lower on the west side and one foot on the east side, promising beauty strength and usefulness on a heavily traveled Southern Ohio thoroughfare.
Forty five boys from Clermont County were sent Monday to Cincinnati for examination before departing for Ft. Knox Kentucky. Fred J Croswell escorted them to the city.
The school board named Tom White of New Richmond as a high school teacher. Mrs. Nellie Burkhardt, after four years as a commercial teacher in New Richmond, will teach the same subject at Felicity.
The Mt Crab Odd Fellows with their degree staff conferred the first degree on two candidates at Batavia lodge Friday night. A large number from the county attended and all work was completed smoothly. Refreshments followed a pleasant social hour despite hot weather.
Horace A. Rice of Batavia opens a Coffee and Tea Shop on Main Street beside the bridge and will stock staple groceries. Decoration day visits include Harry and Wm David and wife with Ben David, Donald Lee Brown visiting Eldon Wilson at Twin Bridges, and Chas Preston passing away at his brother’s home. Tom Walter Harvey and wife spent Sunday with George Hook and family. Don Winder and family visited the Zoo. Howard Moffet and family attended Haggenbeck circus. Lowell Gray and family from Madisonville visited L O Gropen bacher and wife. Harold Ellis and wife visited Emery Parrish.
Carmel’s Flying Needle Club met May 24 at Summerside M E Church with Anna Bersiza presiding. Members discussed record books while a sewing machine sounded as roll call. May 2 4 H leaders and officers attended an Owensville picnic. Jolly Food Club organized in Williamsburg May 24 with Eleanor McCollum as president and Ruth Jean Ashton as vice president. Kathleen Ashton became secretary-treasurer, Martha Ann Fuhr news reporter, Eleanor Jean Fuhr recreation leader. Stitch in Time Club planned summer tasks at Mrs. John Buescher’s, next meeting June ? Eva Stoddard reporter. Merry Modelers held a meeting, next June 8 with Betty Colburn. Jolly Workers met at Glen Este June 11 to sew dresses plan a picnic and adjourn. Helen Davidson reporter.
The Batavia Hotel opened today under new management with Arnold F. Oehler as proprietor and many attractions added. He succeeds former proprietor Carl F. Stander and invites the public to join the celebration.
John Hutchison of the Williams burg Vocational Agriculture Dept demonstrates pork production to the community. In the ten-litter club the first weigh in totals 480 pounds. Pigs were weaned at eight weeks averaging 48 pounds with a heaviest 61 pounds. Contenders Estell Hedrick Donald Hutchinson and Neil McMullen also entered. Estel’s pigs weighed 430 pounds at eight weeks averaging 43 pounds each. Donald’s pigs weighed 330 pounds averaging 80 pounds at eight weeks. Each boy feeds a balanced ration. John’s son owns a purebred Poland China boar. others are not purebred.
Ohio motorists are urged by highway director O W Merrell to drive safely on crowded highways to Chicago. Safe tips include choosing lanes for left and right turns, watching speed, keeping brakes and headlights good, being alert at grade crossings, avoiding skid hazards, and letting passengers sightsee.
