Young Man Drowns Near Batavia Foundry
Robert High an 18 year old resident of Tennessee origin drowned Thursday evening in the East Fork below the mill dam after leaping from a spring board. Clarence Brothers and Gus Eimer assisted in the rescue but the body was recovered an hour later. Eimer has recovered seven bodies and saved three from drowning. funeral services will be held Saturday at the grandparents' home.

Sunday School Picnic Altered After Drowning Incident
Miss Wilma Brown led a Sunday school outing for her class at Summitt school house last Friday. The children enjoyed games and a dinner served at noon. The event was moved from a creekside location near town due to a drowning incident the night before.

Just In Time Rain Saves Potatoes and Affects Crops
Rain arrived Sunday just in time to save the early potato crop in full bloom that needed badly after two weeks of dry, hot May weather. Ground was hard and dry, but the rain helped seed recovery though more rain was needed for a tobacco crop. Wheat and oats also need rain as heads reach a critical point. too much rain could cause wheat lodging and losses.
Stonelick Township Social Benefits Red Cross Drive
Stonelick township held a town ship social at Favrer's ball Owensville on Saturday May 26 for the Red Cross drive. The program included a patriotic segment and refreshments with cake ice cream coffee and sandwiches followed by dancing. Representatives from all parts of the township attended and about 185 dollars was realized. Attendees left hoping Stonelick was doing its mite.

Batavia High School Commencement Delayed by Power Outage
The Batavia commencement was held Friday night at the town hall with Supt. Aultman speaking. The program followed the printed order aside from the absent speaker. The stage had leaves and flowers, the class performed well, and the Batavia orchestra provided music. An accident at the power house caused no electric lights. Normal students received their diplomas with the regular class.

War Savings Week Proclaimed by City and Governor
The week of June 24 1918 is designated War Savings Week by the U S Treasury and Ohio Governor. Boys Depart for Camp Taylor From Batavia Armory
Last Wednesday morning the 89 Clermont county selects gathered at the Batavia armory and marched two abreast through North street to Market to Main and to the N. W. depot. About 500 people cheered as the Batavia band led the way with Bud Foster bearing the flag. The boys, a fine looking group, left with warm wishes from many friends amid a few sad farewells. This number finished up class 1, until the next register today.

Pike Resurfacing Progress on Milford to Batavia Pike
James Hurley of the State highway department Milford oversees resurfacing of the pike between Batavia and Olive Branch with sand. Oil laid last summer is resurfacing and a sand coat will smooth and seal the road becoming among the best in the state after three treatments since its completion. Ed Ernst provides the sand while the State crew applies it. Mr. H. checked the pike near Felicity last week.

Tobacco Loss Delays Planting Prospects For Farmers
Rain damaged early tobacco crops leaving many plants set out but later drying weather caused heavy losses. If no season returns soon the crop may wood in the bed and growers may need to switch to corn or soy beans for winter feed. Farmers say there is time until June 15 to plant a tobacco crop if conditions improve.

Accidental Rifle Death of 10 Year Old Will Rhinehart
Will Rhinehart a ten year old boy from near Twin Bridges died instantly last Saturday when a loaded rifle in his kitchen fell and discharged. His sister heard the shot and found him mortally wounded the gun unloaded and the cause unknown. Burial set for Monday with community grief and a warning about keeping guns loaded.

Eighth Grade Pupils Enter Clermont County High Schools
Clermont county high schools will be replenished next fall by rural 8th grade pupils who passed the year end exam. About 200 scholars will enter high school with tuition paid by their township boards. existing grad students pay none. Per capita funding limits apply. If monthly running cost is 100 dollars with 20 pupils, each pupil adds 5 dollars, so more scholars reduce cost per pupil. Fewer rural scholars expected than last year.

Clermont Company M Boys Transferred To Camp Lee
The Clermont boys of Company M from Camp Sheridan Alabama were moved to Camp Lee West Virginia last week. They anticipate a brief stay before heading overseas. A fine crop of alfalfa hay was harvested last week in this section. The crop was heavy and well cured, kept dry during harvesting, and now commands strong demand and good prices as cow feed due to high milk-producing quality.
