Amelia High School address denounces Communism and defends free enterprise

Tom Ireland, Cleveland attorney, spoke at Amelia High School on the dangers of Communism and the defense of free enterprise. He argued for decisive action against internal and external subversive groups and praised American achievements while warning against totalitarian reforms. The speech links Lenin’s thesis to today’s political clash and calls for unity to protect individual rights.

Clermont artists flock to East Fork for spring canvases

Along the East Fork of the Little Miami River Clermont County sees daily paint_sessions by artists in charcoal watercolors and oils. Notables include C A Meurer of Terrace Park and Mrs Louise Hall of Newtown who study art and teach piano. Meurer aged eighty four paints classic still lifes with pieces selling for 500 to 1000 dollars. his piece The Equipment of a Doughboy dates to World War I and hung in San Francisco. Mrs Sigmund Wise of Cincinnati joins the group, bringing seven hobbies from painting to silversmithing. Local writer Natty Altman Batavia correspondent Jennie Mae Lipps and George Ankermiller play supporting roles as friendly rivals. Harry Tucker formerly editor of The Courier returns from California. Clermont County coroner Dr F B Skeen reports an engaging state coroners meeting in Columbus.

Death of Goshen man from 75 foot fall at Cincinnati hospital

Services were held for Ohr Holmes 84 of Goshen who died May 28 from a 75 foot fall from a window at Christ Hospital Cincinnati. The incident occurred about 1:30 am when an attendant was outside the room. Holmes survived by two sisters Miss Endora and Miss Anne Holmes and two brothers Daniel and George of Goshen. Burial was in Goshen Cemetery. funeral director Hannah Funeral Home Blanchester. The Holmes family once ran a general store in Goshen. Also noted the Clermont County WCUU spring meeting at Williamsburg expanding its program with Mrs Clyde Fletcher Felicity as president.

Batavia Runner LeRoy Smith Wins State Track Title

LeRoy Smith, 17, from Batavia, won the state 440 yard dash in 51.6 seconds at Columbus May 27 28 becoming Batavia High School’s first state champion. He earned a gold track shoe trophy and plans to attend Howard University in Washington DC next fall to study engineering.

Milford Man Bound Over In Brother Beating Case

Edward Vinson, 22, of Milford, is bound over to Clermont County grand jury for severely beating his 16 year old brother. Deputy Hutchinson served the warrant after an argument over money in downtown Cincinnati preceded the assault. Vinson, arrested earlier in March 1947 for a wine store holdup shooting, had charges ignored by the grand jury.

Suit Filed Against State Patrolman for $2500 Damages

Herbert A. Rumpke of Batavia is suing State Highway Patrolman Mark S. Trees of Georgetown and Travelers Indemnity Co. in Clermont County Common Pleas Court for $2500. He alleges Trees used rude abusive language after a May 4 stop at the Mt Carmel Tabasco Pike and State Route 74, demanded to be called sir, and struck him in the mouth injuring his eye.

Cafe Proprietor Arrested for Illegal Liquor Sale

Raymond Ernst proprietor of the Silver Barn Route 125 near Amelia faces a hearing before Mayor A C Munden of Batavia at 4 30 this morning on a charge of selling liquor without a license. He was arrested Saturday night by Deputy Sheriff Marvin Bissantz after selling a drink to the officer and released on bond after a preliminary hearing.

Suit Set for Monday in Clermont County Civil Action

A $60,000 damage suit by Mrs. Marjorie Hughes against Gerald Tiles, both of Batavia, will be heard in Clermont County Common Pleas Court Monday. Hughes claims Tiles used abusive language and kicked her on August 18, 1947, while Tiles says she entered his property and that his only contact was raising his hands to protect himself.

Bethel Man Injured In Auto Accident

Bethel resident Robert Ott was injured Monday night when his car collided with a vehicle driven by Edward McChesney on Route 125 near Bethel. Ott was transported by ambulance to Christ Hospital in Cincinnati for treatment.
