Decoration Day Observed by Batavia Folks and Visitors

Decoration Day activities at Batavia included graveside ceremonies at Union Cemetery and a bridge service for Marines. Veterans from Civil War Spanish American and World War I attended with Captain Frebis as speaker. The Batavia Armory parade featured the Batavia band Drum Corps National Guard Boy Scouts and Auxiliary drawing large crowds.

Benefit Town Hall Review in Batavia for Town Hall funds

A benefit event in Batavia features 100 participants including a 28 girl chorus, local sketches, two Batavia orchestras, and groups from Cincinnati. Proceeds fund interior improvements for the town hall with seats priced 80 cents on lower floor, 26 cents balcony, 20 cents for children. Program runs next week.

Clermont youths to raise pheasants for state program

Frank Stagg of Batavia, game protector, will soon receive pheasant eggs for distribution to local youths who apply and learn to hatch and rear the chicks. For each eight week old bird released, the state pays $1.25, aiding conservation and earnings for Clermont county.

Aged Citizen Kirk Fleck Dies After Illness

Kirk Fleck, an elderly resident, died last Thursday night at the home of Frank Newberry after several weeks of illness. The immediate cause was a stroke of paralysis. Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church Saturday with burial in Union Cemetery. He was survived by three daughters. An unrelated item notes two white rowing machines going to be sold at cost by J. O. Fuhr of Williamsport, Ohio.

Diphtheria and Smallpox Immunization in Clermont County

Clermont County cements progress against diphtheria and smallpox through immunization efforts led by Dr. C R Colburn and nurse Alice Shane Beckman. With a $5040 budget, about 6000 children, including 38000 immunized and 1500 vaccinated, now enjoy protection, highlighting cost efficiency and strong local physician cooperation.

Child Killed by Car Near Mt. Carmel In Cincinnati

Ruth Ramey was struck by Catherine Smythe driving near Mt. Carmel on Friday at 6 30 pm and died at General Hospital Cincinnati at 7 50 pm. The child darted from the roadside and was against the car before the driver could stop. The Smythe vehicle struck the child and she rendered aid before authorities arrived. The family recently moved from Madisonville where the father is employed.

Batavia U B Choir to Give Free Church Entertainment

The Batavia U B choir presents a free program at the church this Friday June 8 at 8 p m. All welcome. The program includes piano solos duets ladies quartets playslets and various vocal numbers such as The Census Taker and Tea cream and Cike.

Needed Repairs To be Made to County Roads by Commissioners

County-wide road work contracts will be awarded next Monday as the Board of County Commissioners plans repairs across all townships. Contracts range from 109 to 1200 cubic yards for various Clermont roads, with most routes expected to improve by fall though note rests on Davis hill and Clark hill which are considered beyond full repair.

Bicentennial Birthday Planned by Poets Union

The Poets Union of Brown and Clermont Counties plans a June 11 2:30 pm celebration of George Washington’s birth at Batavia Methodist Church. Judge Frank Davis, Clermont’s oldest lawyer, will give the address. Gen Julius A Penn of Batavia chairs the music committee. All Union members friends and the public are invited.

Hamilton County Field Day Promotes Money Saving Farm Practices

At the 1938 Field Day near Mt. Healthy Ohio four miles north on the Hamilton pike farmers will view demonstrations on drain tile outlets hose levels farm machinery care mowers binders tandem hitch hay chopping and household electrical use. Gypsies Visit Batavia and Clermont County

A band of gypsies visited Batavia and Clermont County last Saturday. Deputies warned them, and they moved on after refusals to admit them. The group pitched a camp near Newtown over Sunday watched by local residents and the Indian Hill Rangers. Fortune telling was their main trade. They traveled 12 large autos with 40 people and 30 children.

The Clermont County Board of Elections has an absent voter ballot application on file for Geo. Hardy of Loveland. Hardy, a college student visiting from Washington DC, will file an absent ballot request in October 1982 with expectations of a large turnout.

Squire Fined in Benna Vista for Net Possession

Magistrate William Morrison aged 65 of Wrightsville Adams county was arrested by Deputy Game Warden Joe E Garrison Seaman and Grover Sanderson Otway on illegal possession of fish nets. He faced a 100 dollar fine plus costs, gave notice of appeal and posted a 1000 dollar appeal bond. Alleged to hold one wing net and four fiddler nets. Never too old to fish.

Dangerous scrap-iron bridge over Main street Batavia

A pile of scrap iron at the foot of Main street Batavia is being used as a bridge. It carries hundreds of autos daily and is dangerous with floor boards loose and the floor six to eight inches uneven. The rattling noise suggests it may collapse at any time. Officials may wait for a serious accident before acting.

Two Found Dead in Heat Fatalities in Edenton and Felicity

In Edenton Elmira wife of Arthur Miller aged 65 was found dead by her husband in a garden where she had been planting pumpkin seed. Coroner Curtis ruled death caused by excessive heat. In Felicity farmer Frank Saucher aged 62 was found dead in his barn Thursday evening. Coroner Curtis also ruled that death was from excessive heat.

Palmer leads in precinct vote for Congress at large

Secretary of State Clarence J. Brown tabulated Ohio precinct results showing Palmer with a small lead over Herbert for Congress at large. George H. Bender and L. Taylor Palmer previously led the field and will face Democratic nominees Stephen M. Young and Charles H. Truax in November.

The past week brought heavy frosts in the uplands and light frost in the valleys, followed by rain and a cold spell that hindered vegetation. Strikes Gas On Hauser Farm Near New Richmond

Last week, L R Fiscus and crew drilled a well 2 1/2 miles below New Richmond on the J W Hauser farm. A strong natural gas vein was struck at 252 feet, halting further work while attempting to cap the well and utilize the gas. Tools weighing 120 pounds were placed over the mouth but did not stop the gas. Clermont county soil holds oils and diamonds, suggesting possible petroleum deposits in lower strata. Mr Hauserman, long in the Philippines for gold mining, has returned to the United States and is now in California. He is expected back soon.
