In Williamsburg the Sullivan Shoe Co. operates three eight hour shifts producing over two thousand pairs daily. The town, a leading business center, has completed water works and may take over the light plant when the lease ends next summer. Large payrolls provide work for men and women across miles.
State and Federal authorities urge tuberculin testing for all cattle in Clermont County with an estimated total cost of 6500 dollars, of which the county would cover 3500. Milk producers require protection to maintain market access. County commissioners take the matter under consideration as the state covers all condemned cattle costs.
Miss Sarah Lail hosted a Breakfast Bridge last Friday at her country home near Batavia. Her sister-in-law Mrs Elizabeth Lail assisted. Guests included Mesdames Barbeau Patchell Nichols Ashburn Ely Moore and Misses Jamieson and Stewart in attendance.
Reports from Clermont county describe a strong wheat season with wind reducing some yield. Frank M. Titus and his son of Williamsburg yielded 424 bushels per acre from 24 acres of trumbul wheat, regarded as one of the county’s best crops.
William R. Mansfield formerly of Batavia and Denver District Director of the United States Immigration Bureau died suddenly at his Denver home last Wednesday from heart disease. A widow survives him. He entered government service in 1900 and will be buried Friday at Riverside cemetery. Mansfield spent his boyhood in Batavia and was educated there.
Harvest ended with yields from 22 to 45 bushels per acre. Bisantz Bros near Amelia thrashed 1500 bushels from 60 acres, the largest on a single farm. Oates reports strong output but prices give little profit to owners and tenants.
Farmers report blackberry yields far below expectations due to heavy rains during setting. Cabbage crops deteriorating with thousands of heads decaying in fields as market prices fall. Bugar.com offers a good variety at 20 cents.
John Zeller 25 of Cincinnati doubled down from first degree to second degree murder for the May 1930 killing of Robt Clemons in Feesburg. He faced life with possible pardon after nine years after pleading guilty in Georgetown amid a partial jury panel and a moved venue. Prosecutor Houston and F H Frebis led the state, Eli Speidel and Hugh C Nichols defended.
Batavia lost 6 to 3 at Hebron Kentucky with Batavia chalking 9 hits to Hebron’s 6. Z Anstead led Batavia with a triple and two singles while umpiring criticized for costly calls. Next Sunday Batavia travels to Erlanger as they seek one more defeat to be eliminated.
The Carthage Fair runs August 12 14 16 and 18 with four big days of exhibits racing and strong horse entries. The display promises to be the best in years and invites attendance to see the fast records and special features. Remember the dater.
Sheriff Roberts and deputies investigated chicken thefts in Owensville after reports of men taking poultry. They found a sack with ten hens, one dead, identified by John Hughes as his property. No arrests made yet, but officials have leads on suspects. thieves did not reclaim loot left on the fairground.
County Agent Wilson reports widespread lawn damage from sod web worm in Ohio. The pest, ½ inch to 1 inch long, builds a web at the grass root base. This is the first year such outbreaks have appeared in the state. Various treatments are being tested, including a corrosive sublimate mix, but efficacy and safety remain under study.
John Henderson of Williamsville, a prominent Cler mont county citizen and staunch Republican, died at home last Wednesday. His widow survives him. Funeral services are planned for Sunday at the residence.
Grant Memorial M E Church in Pt Pleasant Ohio scheduled a Sunday dedication Aug 2 with morning and afternoon sessions. The program lists hymns prayers sermons remarks presentations and musical performances by Amelia Orchestra Henry Grad Rev L L Cherrington and Rev F H Russell with local congregations and officers named.
Elizabeth Heofler a 15 year old daughter of John Heofler of Twin Bridges near Williamsburg left home July 4 driving a Ford and carrying $9. She sought to see more of the world and had previously run away to Chicago. She is described as fair with blue eyes, 5 feet 4 inches tall, and weighs 115 pounds. Her parents await word.
Miss Virginia Galvin daughter of Ada Levis Galvin of Batavia married Willard J Schindler son of John A Schindler in a garden ceremony at the Hotel Alms. Rev W W Holland officiated with family members and friends in attendance. The couple will reside at 2840 Burnet Avenue in the near term and tour later in Flint before a concert.
Batavia businessman George Stewart announces the relocation of his Quality Shop to a room in the Hugo Building opposite Rapp's hardware store on Saturday August 1. Stewart, a young local advertiser, plans a modern display counters system to showcase a sample of every item and continues to offer a full line of family clothing and related goods.
A large crop of wheat and rye is being thrashed and milled. Prospects look bright as millers lower prices on soft wheat flour. Dewey Bros Co of Blanchester has reduced its flour price by over a dollar per barrel.
Three groups from the Ohio Agricultural Department are in Batavia this week to inspect cornfields for borers. They work in gangs of three, report findings to the state, and advise farmers on control steps. So far, borers have been few in Batavia.

The Home Coming at Mt Pisgah will be held Sunday August 9 instead of August 10 as previously announced in last week's issue.
National Guard open house at Batavia Armory drew about 400 attendees after recent repaint and repairs. Kin ner defeated Himes in a boxing match, Spaulding beat Massey, Chief White Eagle spoke, Layton Mc Afee led arms drill results, and Legion Drum Corps provided music. refreshments included lemonade and wafers. Lieutenant Forrest Ely oversaw the event.
The Clermont Fruit Growers Association and County Agent Wilson sponsor the annual summer orchard tour on Tuesday August 4. The route includes Albert Day farm near Mt Carmel, Wilfert orchard near Tabasco, Lipps orchard southwest of Amelia, and Leeds orchard near Lindale with a picnic lunch and expert talks from Ohio State University horticulture staff. Attendance is encouraged for fruit growers and visitors to learn thinning, deep tillage, and farm practices.
Ohio State University economist Guy W. Miller reports dairy production has stayed ahead of 1930 levels while consumption dips in cities. Milk sales to major markets rise 3 to 6 percent from last year, shippers increase monthly, but pasture shortfalls and a 20 percent butter price drop curb feeding and production growth. Slaughter of cows rose in April, yet no clear swing in supply is seen.
Ex County Clerk David Galla gher, a road inspector for chipping contracts, suffered a broken leg when a tarvia truck rolled over his right ankle in Clermont county. He slipped as he left the seven ton truck. X rays at Dr Ash burn's showed fractures above the ankle. County insured him with State Liability Insurance Co. and he may receive two thirds of his pay while off work.
The Clermont County Board of Health in Batavia renewed the contract of county nurse Mrs. Alice Beckman. Beckman, daughter of former county commissioner W. S. Shane of Mulberry, was praised for her efficiency and exemplary performance with the State Department of Health and local health officers.
Ben Benjamin, a dry cleaner, will occupy the room vacated by Stewart's Quality Shop and is now found there. He is known for his prompt service and solid business knowledge.
