The Cincinnati Commercial reports that Robert Arnold, an 86 year old Batavia resident, was admitted to City hospital July 26 with dysentery and died the next day. Coroner Haerr to be asked for a post mortem. Fifty laborers, described as dagoes, arrived from Cincinnati to work on the P and V extension, many armed and ready for a fight or for work.
William Henry Harrison Robinson, a Batavia veteran and journalist, died Friday after long illness. Born in Batavia in 18 he served in the 1%th Ohio and worked as a printer and township clerk. Survived by wife and three children, his funeral was held July 24 with family and soldiers in attendance.
In a Friday night storm lightning struck George Defay of Monterey destroying his barn and contents. The barn held summer crops three horses farm implements and machinery valued around 1500 dollars with no insurance. Conrad Franz also lost barn and stock insured for 60 dollars and total losses near 1500 dollars.
Temporary dwelling used by Joseph Marshall and family for a home destroyed by fire was struck by lightning last Friday night and caught fire. Marshall, dazed briefly, extinguished the blaze. Mrs. Marshall was severely shocked but recovering. Lightning explored the home and damaged a cupboard with glass fruit jars, while one tin can burst open and its contents scattered.
Xenia Republican notes Blanchester voters funded a $30,000 water works system that was built but lacks an adequate water supply. A proposed $5,000 bond to build a reservoir failed by two thirds, leaving the town with a finished plant but no real domestic or fire service, despite plentiful rainfall this year.

A storm last Friday washed away part of the abutment of the bridge on the Miami road at Loveland over O Banion creek. Damage to shade trees and crops occurred but traffic and east bound trains remained. Epworth Heights camp meeting opens July 31 and runs to August 15 with a full published programme.
Golden wedding celebration of William Kain and Polly West of Williamsburg was reported in the Courier on July 1. William Kain, aged 81, died Sunday morning, leaving a widow and one son. He was grandson of James Kain, son of Colonel Daniel Kain, and uncle of Bishop Randolph Foster. Funeral held yesterday with large attendance as mourners gathered for the family.
Last week in Cincinnati tobacco offerings were large but prices held firm. Yearly crop estimated at 74 percent of last year with 2,825 hogsheads offered and 2,250 sold. Best red types fetched up to 20 dollars. average price around 12.50 dollars. Democratic Senatorial convention set for Thursday in Mason Warren county with E. A. Tissander and J. D. Garrison as Brown county candidates.
Williamsburg merchant Millard McNutt drove to Batavia and on the return trip encountered a roadblock of geese. A nest of bees then attacked as the horse reared and the carriage shaft broke. With neighbors’ help and a rain shower, McNutt subdued the mob of geese and bees and continued home, “knobby” but undaunted.
A letter from Clive Hulik Clermont’s naval cadet reports June 7 startup on the training ship Monongahela bound for Funchal with arrival July 2. He expects to reach Annapolis July 28 and take a month of leave in September. A partial solar eclipse occurs tomorrow morning from 7:55 to 10:20, covering seven twelfths of the disk. Seth W Brown congressman absent since March 1 with weeds overtaking his Lebannon home. neighbor jokes about Congress adjourning soon and someone mowing the yard.
A Cincinnati newspaper reports a visiting minister was seriously injured trying to board a Batavia street car. The remans of Reuban Steelman were buried at Old Bethel cemetery last Sunday at 11 o'clock. He was a neighborhood pioneer who had lived nearby all his life. A widow and one son survive him.
