Clermont native Bulow linked to Grant ceremony and 1928 VP talk

Governor William J. Bulow of South Dakota, born near Moscow in Clermont County, may speak at the dedication of the Grant home and memorial bridge in September. He is a Clermont boy, a prominent western lawyer and stock raiser, and a potential Democratic vice presidential candidate in 1928.

Grange Conference in Batavia Discusses Degrees and Rally

In Batavia on Thursday July 14 about 60 Grange officers and workers met. Bro Winemiller shared mixer games and Bro Fichter, state lecturer, urged patron responsibility and questions. A sixth degree target was set for Williamsburg in October with a July 30 fourth degree gatherer. The Grange Rally at the Fair Grounds on August 11 features live speaker music baseball contests and a potluck dinner.

Samples Wanted for Soil Testing at Clermont Farm Field Day

A portable soils laboratory from Ohio State University will visit the Clermont County Experiment Farm on Friday July 29 for the annual Field Day. Specialists will test soils brought in and provide treatment guidance, including available phosphorus and soil acidity measurements. Providers outline sample collection from multiple spots in a field, mixing, and testing a half pint sample per type.

Obituary of Almarette Stayton Croswell

Almarette Stayton Croswell of Brown County Ohio born May 10 1852 died July 14 1927 aged 75 years 2 months 4 days married John W Croswell October 26 1876 nine children eight living four teen grandchildren and one great grandchild survive with husband and a community of relatives. The couple celebrated their golden wedding anniversary last year and her life is described as devoted Christian service in Ridge Christian and later Methodist Cedron churches. Her passing is mourned by family neighbors and friends including Elbert Croswell of Somers MT and several grandchildren.

Sunday Fire and Community Events Report

A fire destroyed the roof of the old Whittaker home on the Batavia Amelia pike Sunday morning with Amelia and Batavia fire brigades containing the blaze. The U B Society hosted a successful ice cream social and play the prior evening. The Men’s Bible Class had 86 attendees, and 7 Greatest Wonders was the sermon theme. Next Sunday features the Seven Greatest Wonders of Heaven and a union service with Rev. Stafford. A Sunday school picnic is planned for July 30 at Owensville fairgrounds with games and a ball game. James W Walker hosted a dinner at Grandview Farm. The group entertained friends and listened to a Dempsey Sharkey broadcast.

Clermont County reports livestock totals by township and village for taxation. A forthcoming list will publish chicken counts next week. The note highlights autos trucks and tractors reducing horse numbers amid tax listing pressure.

County Board Sets School Opening Date and Hours

At its last meeting the County Board of Education discussed starting the county schools on the first Tuesday of September the 6th and proposed a 9:00 am to 4:00 pm day. The board noted rural students with long walks should not start too early and allowed local boards to adjust times where needed while urging adherence when possible.

County Grange Picnic Set for August 11 at Owensville

Clermont county hosts a full day event on August 11 1927 at Owensville Fair Ground with fifteen Grange groups inviting Farm Bureau members and farmers. Activities include ball games horse shoe contests music readings talks and a keynote by a State Grange Master. Expected attendance 1200 with baskets encouraged and neighbors invited.

Batavia Falls to Owensville in 8 4 Defeat

Owensville piled up 17 hits off Kramer and Bishop and capitalized on Batavia misplays, dropping Batavia 8 to 4 as the Felicity squad replaced Loveland and routed Williamsburg 9 to 4. New Richmond upset Mt. Carmel 5 to 4 to seize third place. Read it in the Courier first.

County commissioners meet to approve pike repairs and payrolls

The July 18 meeting with full board passed bills and appropriations for pike repair. Items include labor payments for Wilbur Cousins and William Krantz, supplies from Johnson & Watson and Ely & Hill, and various refunds and indigent payments. Resolutions allowed repairs on Boot-Jack-Henings Mills and Crosstown road and authorized Clough pike work up to 800.

Farmers Meetings At Permtown And Owensville

Farmers meetings announced at Permtown school house on Tuesday August 2 at 8 15 p m feature talks by Ray Stoddard on Fall Fertilizer and Herman Otto on Agriculture in Washington. Fertilize Corn At Clermont County Experiment Farm

The Clermont County Experiment Farm compares corn fertilization methods including broadcast and hill applications with mixed fertilizers and acid phosphate. Field Day is planned for Friday July 29 at the farm to view early growth and later maturity and yield results. Farmers are classified by fertilizer practice as none broadcast hill or both.
