Liquor Stores Extend Hours in Clermont County

Two Clermont County liquor stores will stay open two extra hours each Friday and Saturday starting on an announced date. Batavia and Milford outlets will open at 11 a.m. and close at 9 p.m. both days to curb buy and resell for profit after state stores close. Clerks may not receive overtime pay under current laws. Jerry Shinkle of Batavia earns OSU Engineering honor roll with a 3.50 average.

Boy Narrowly Escapes Death After Rope Snare

Danny Patchell thirteen of Rt 222 north of Latavia tangled in a rope hanging from a tree while playing last Thursday. His brother Paul seventeen and neighbor William Norman cut him down and performed artificial respiration. Doctors Dobert and Skeen of Batavia said he was out of danger upon arrival.

SCS Report Details Six Month Progress in Clermont District 1956

Soil Conservationist Melvin Helsel reports six month progress for 1956 in Clermont District. 29 cooperators with 2272 acres applied for technical assistance and 15 conservation farm plans covering 1850 acres were developed. 36 ACP referrals were serviced and help given to Ohio Division of Forestry and Wildlife. Notable gains include contour farming 16 acres and tile drains 20 rods.

Census Bureau supervisor Hobart Yerkey says the July Current Population Survey will ask Clermont residents about holding more than one job. Similar questions in 1950 showed about 3 percent or 1.8 million of 61 million workers had two jobs. local data will be collected July 16 by Ruth Shields of Batavia.

Hartwell Captured Near Prison Farm

George Hartwell of Clermont County was recaptured in a nearby field last Thursday after fleeing London prison farm. His two companions were captured. Hartwell and his younger brother were convicted of burglary, and their mother, Mrs. Hattie Hartwell, is imprisoned for attempting to smuggle a gun into the jail to aid their escape.

Park Festival Opens Friday in Amelia Lions Club Event

Amelia Lions Club sponsors a three day park festival July 20 21 and 22 starting at 7 p.m. with a village parade to the park site. Helicopter rides on Friday and Saturday evenings plus a penny vote beauty contest features 27 local girls representing area businesses. Welfare Director Sam Ausman of Williamsburg may replace William Dewdney of Batavia as head of the aid for the aged office. Ausman has submitted his resignation to county commissioners for August 1. Dewdney plans to quit August 1 due to ill health. commissioners have not acted on Ausman’s resignation.

Bass Receives Five Years Probation For Fatal Crash

Edward Bass, 23, was given five years probation by Hamilton County Common Pleas Court after pleading guilty to second degree manslaughter in the October 29 death of 47 year old Ruth Donnelly. Prosecutors said he was driving Mrs. Donnelly home when his vehicle collided with another at Eight Mile Road and Kellogg Avenue, fatally burning and killing her as a fire started.

Juveniles Held Admit Lootings at Legion Post and Theater

Bethel police and Deputy McNutt held two Bethel juveniles who confessed looting the Archie Lee Boyce American Legion Post four times and the Midway Theater three times. They said they obtained small change at the post and about $200 from the theater on two burglaries with no loot in the third.

Man and Wife Seek Injunction In Dump Closure

Judge Orville Halbisch granted a temporary restraining order barring the Clermont County Board of Health from closing a dump on the Faye and Allen D. Gilkison farm at Stonelick. Faye Gilkison and Allen Gilkison seek an injunction to stop interference with the dump's operation, arguing no notice or hearing was given on a July 11 resolution to close it by July 13. Clermont County Remits Small Liquor Fines in Fiscal Year

Clermont County reported one of the lowest liquor fines totals in Ohio, sending $25 to the state treasury for the year ending June 30. Highway Patrol fines totaled $12,056.04, with state auditor noting patrol fines surpassed two million dollars for the fourth straight year as statewide liquor fines dropped to a six year low.
