Local men to leave for service in army

Clermont County Draft Board No 2 sent a group to Fort Thomas for final examinations for induction. Twenty two were accepted for Army service and twenty for Navy. Army draftees listed with by name and hometown for reporting July 24. Navy assignments include numerous Clermont County residents with several addresses and townships.

Wire program eases access for farmers on repairs

The War Food Administration in Washington announced a simplified system allowing farmers to obtain wire for repairs. Farmers apply to their local Rationing Board for a certificate, then present it to a supply house to receive the wire.

Funeral services held for widow of former minister

Funeral services were held at Batavia Presbyterian Church for Mrs. Jessamine Curtiss Huecker widow of the late Samuel Huecker former Batavia minister. She died Friday July 9 in Madisonville and is survived by a daughter Metford. Interment was in Batavia Union Cemetery. Mrs Huecker was a Galena Ohio native and active in local clubs and church work.

Defense Council Picnic Set at Sargent's Grove

North Union Township Civilian Defense Council sponsors its second annual picnic at Sargent's Grove Glen Este on Sunday July 25. More than two hundred attend last year. this year offers larger crowd amusements and free refreshments with a 1.00 dollar per family entry. Clermont workers affected by new plan

John M. Baker announces a Cincinnati area employment stabilization plan narrowing the area to include Hamilton and Clermont Counties in Ohio and Campbell, Kenton and Boone Counties in Kentucky. The plan aims to curb labor migration, reduce turnover and absenteeism, and enforce hiring rules while protecting workers and employers.

Lightning Kills Summerside Farmer John Rumpke

John Rumpke, a well known Summerside farmer, was instantly killed by a lightning strike Monday afternoon while shocking wheat on his farm off Route 74. His 16 year old son James escaped serious injury and neighbors moved the body to the home. Dr. F S Skeen of Batavia declared death immediate. He leaves a widow Lydia, daughter Velma, son James, three brothers Ed William Henry and three sisters Alma Shannon Alvena Coombs, with service held Thursday at White's Funeral Home Mt. Washington and burial at Mt Moriah cemetery.

Housewives Attend Food Preservation Meetings

The Clermont County Victory Garden Committee reports 463 county housewives attended 18 War Food Preservation meetings led by home economics speakers. Attendees learned canning and drying, with guidance urging each family to preserve 40 cans of tomatoes 40 cans of other vegetables and 40 cans of fruit per family member.

Batavia Band Concerts Set Friday at Court House

A series of Batavia Band Concerts will start Friday evening on Main Street in front of the Court House weather permitting. The band includes many Batavia High School alumni led by P. F. Jamieson. Street traffic will be redirected around a mobile band stand with limited parking nearby. If rain hits, the opener will be postponed as announced by Jamieson.

Club meeting features talks on figs and Oriental poppies

Mrs McCullum and Mrs Mc Kibbon hosted a club session with Cecile Glaney discussing figs and Helen Hutchinson presenting Oriental poppies. Mrs Ruffner contributed further notes and refreshments followed. The group notes farmers may sell wool directly to mills now that Order No. 50 was amended June 12.
