Ground Is Broken for New Auxier Building in Batavia

Construction begins on a Chevrolet showroom and garage on Main Street Batavia. The 64 by 100 foot brick front with concrete back, steel framework and white painted exterior will house the Auxier dealership with 43 feet of plate glass. Architect M Rees of Montgomery and Murphy Brothers contractors lead the project with staff unchanged including Wayne Preston Gordon Woodmansee and W B Lang. Completion targeted for late Fall.

Veterans refunds delayed to aid 1950 election

George H. Bender accuses the current and past administrations of delaying $2.8 billion in veterans' insurance premium refunds. He says the Hoover Commission shows VA funding is heavy and that the postponement until 1950 is a political tactic to influence voters and help Administration supporters in an election year.

Batavia report shows Mayor A. C. Munden handling four cases over the weekend. Two defendants bound over to Clermont County grand jury. one freed on 200 bond with hearing set tomorrow. Williamsburg arrests for drunk and disorderly and for assault and battery involving Ligud Wardlow. Wardlow fined 50 dollars plus costs on first charge and jailed with 1 000 bond on second. Fireworks offender Fred Richards fined 50 dollars with 40 suspended after shooting firecrackers on the highway at Williamsburg. Cincinnati man Robert Lee Barrows released on 200 bond after an accident on Route 50 near Stovelick bridge. Dayton’s Dudley Dixon bound over for driving while intoxicated. Mayor absent due to unspecified reasons.

Ohio Department of Health data indicate a generally low disease rate in Clermont County for May. Reported cases include three measles, one meningitis, three pneumonia, and three whooping cough cases.

Fire Department Elects Officers For Coming Year

At the Batavia Fire Department annual meeting held Friday evening June 24, new officers were elected for the coming year. Elected were assistant chief Clark Gregg captain Walter Lytle first lieutenant James Lewis second lieutenant Emil Dial secretary treasurer Karl South.

Local Boy Wins Distinguished Rifleman Medal at 16

Jack H. Channer 16, son of Mrs. Herbert I. Channer of Batavia, receives the Distinguished Rifleman Medal from the National Rifle Association in Washington D C. He began target shooting in 1947, rose through 14 ranks, and now tops junior shooters as a Culver Military Academy student and active Rifle Team member.

Bethel Woman Weds Michigan Conservationist

A Bethel woman married conservationist Crawford Lytle Bates of Harrison, Michigan, in a Grand Mefford ceremony on June 30. Bates works for the Michigan Department of Conservation. the couple will reside at Wilson State Park on Budd Lake near Harrison.

No Hit Game By Batavia Pitcher In Clermont Nl League

Chuck Lewis pitched a one hit game for Batavia against Williamsburg on July 3 in Clermont County Baseball League. Batavia won 1 to 0 as Lewis allowed thirty batters with two walks. Batavia had five second inning hits and totaled three in that frame while Harry Rolph and Baird contributed multi hits. Williamsburg pitcher Wilson also pitched well as only one runner reached third in the ninth.

Three State Routes In Clermont County Get Treatment

Ohio Highway Director T. J. Kauer announces surface treatment for three Clermont County routes. Route 73 in Wayne Township covers 0.83 mile, Route 122 in Wayne and Madison Townships covers 5.60 miles, and Route 132 in Goshen Township covers 1.72 miles. Completion is set for October 15, 1949. Walter Follmer of Hamilton awarded the road work contract. Mohn Bros. of Lima, Ohio awarded the guard-rails painting contract, finishing by October 1, 1949.

The Clermont County chapter of the Disabled American Veterans and the Boy Scouts plan traffic control and first aid at the Owensville Fair in August. New commander W. H. Hampton, 80 members, speaker Albert L. Daniels, and multiple Scout leaders and training events were announced. Camporee success noted with 203 participants and new units formed in Mulberry.

Accident Occurs Near Williamsburg on July Fourth

Clermont County Deputy Sheriff Marvin Bissantz was returning from Tunnel Mills near Williamsburg when a car driven by Emile Giglo struck his rear, causing major damage. Giglo, learning to drive, later swerved at the Batavia graveyard entrance on State Route 74 and was booked on a reckless driving charge. He has lived in the U S four years, originally from spare Mills area.

Lost Baby and Dog Found After Community Search

Three and a half year old John Russell Sturgeon disappeared July 4 from Fair Oaks Road near Mt. Holly with his dog.Neighbors and campers organized a search and found the boy asleep in an orchard at the DX Ranch on State Route 125 around 11 p.m., with the dog by his side.Townspeople Clermont County Deputy Sheriff Marvin Bissantz and Batavia Fire Chief Jacob Laffleur responded to the scene.

Clermont Sportsmen To Hold Picnic

The Clermont County Sportsmen, Inc. will hold a Sunday picnic on July 10 at the club house grounds from 10:00 a m until dark. Weiner sandwiches candy and ice cream will be sold with bait and fly casting contests and prizes.
