The OPA in Batavia announces only occupational driving allows Grade III tires with priorities and warns pleasure driving gets no tires. District officials urge urgent application completion and note 8000 A book holders in Clermont County will have forms mailed within 48 hours.
The notice lists rationing expiry dates for Blue K L M stamps through July 7 and N P Q through Aug 7, Red K L M N through June 30 July 11, etc. It also details coffee sugar shoes gasoline tires fuel oil and office hours with contact numbers for the Batavia board and chief clerk Gifford.
Cincinnati Reds embark on a strenuous road swing, including six double headers in four cities, with 19 games before a July 15 Crosley Field night game against the Chicago Cubs. Lonny Frey returns from a leg muscle pull, boosting a lineup that previously benefited from Woody Williams filling in at second base.
On June 24 Joe D. Evans, son of Mr and Mrs J W Evans, became a midshipman at the U S Naval Academy in Annapolis Maryland. He was an A student in Miami University's Freshman class and was nominated last December by former Representative Judge Jacob Davis of the Sixth District. He will turn 18 on July 7, 1943.
Over 700 Clermont County 4-H club members will exhibit project displays at the Annual Clermont County Farmers Victory Day at the Owensville Fair Grounds on Thursday August 19. They will join a Victory parade style show educational demonstrations and 4-H livestock judging. The event is sponsored by Farm Bureau Grange and county livestock interests to support the rural war effort.
Dr Winston E Koch, Bell Telephone Laboratories radar researcher and UC trained engineer, elected National Vice President of Eta Kappa Nu. He previously earned a UC BS in 1932 MS in 1933 and a PhD from a European university. Married to Kathleen Redmond Koch, New Richmond ties noted.
The Olive Branch church hosts an old fashioned basket dinner at Elliott's place on Shaler Road on July 11. Dinner is served at 6:00 p m followed by Vesper Service with donations requested for garage and Parsonage repairs. Bring a basket and invite friends for fellowship.
Goshen Chapter No 382 O E E held a June 20 initiation conferring the degrees on a new member and hosted a visiting sister chapter from Loveland for the evening.
Chairman Saxton of the Rationing Board calls a meeting of Gasoline Dealers and Authorized Tire Inspectors in Batavia Public School Auditorium on Friday evening July 2 1943 at 8 30 P M Eastern War time. All dealers and inspectors should attend as Cincinnati District Office representatives discuss important matters. The event will feature a sound film demonstrating tire inspections.
Clermont County flag rally at Batavia Eagles Home drew a large crowd on June 27. Frank Hoggatt, county schools superintendent, urged patriotic respect for the flag and its role in the war effort. The event paused amid mourning for Milton J. Kain, former Eagles secretary who helped plan the rally.
County Agent Roy Battles notes wheat producers plan to retain grain for cattle and hog feed. Clermont County livestock numbers rise to new highs while the Corn Belt outlook weakens. U.S. wheat production this year is projected around 730.5 million bushels versus 1942 at 920.43 million.
Clermont County commissioners struggle to hire three dog wardens advertised earlier with no applicants. They vote to hire three men with trucks to seize unlicensed and roaming dogs. Truck owners may bid by reporting to the County Auditor's Batavia office.
Clermont county motorists warned to display their five dollar use car stamp on windshields or face arrest. The stamp may be secured at all county post offices and must be affixed by July 1. Officials call it a federal tax and say noncompliance is a federal offense.
New Richmond schedules a July 4 dedication at Front and Ohio streets for the Honor Roll ceremony. The program features singing, readings, prayers, a speech by John W. Haussermann, and a flag salute with participation by the American Legion, Girl Scouts, Auxiliary Police, and Air Raid Wardens.
OPA official Edward J. Wuest urges immediate purchase of fuel oil to ease fall transport and speed oil to affected areas. Consumers must return renewal applications to the War Price and Rationing Board. Citizens are urged to conserve by sealing unused rooms and keeping garages unheated.
The Clermont County Christmas Seal income for 1942 totaling 1837.02 funds tuberculosis work by the County Health Department. 158 x rays have been taken including many from men rejected by the army for TB. 385 school children have been tested. those with symptoms were x rayed. Miss Margaret Wenzel of Moscow is named 1943 seal sales chairman. plans underway for fall campaign.
Leaders of two Monroe Township communities plan canning and drying demonstrations at Mt Zion and Nicholsville on July 8 and 9. Margery Stanley will conduct both sessions, starting at 1 30 p m. at the Mt Zion Community Center and Grange Hall Nicholsville. The public is invited.
Janice Peden, 17, of Loveland, is charged with arson and murder after allegedly confessing to setting eight fires in the area and burning to death 18 month old Lillian Spencer left in her care. She is held in Lebanon by Warren County authorities following a late night confession to Loveland officials.
The U S Navy launches a nationwide CAN DO Day on July 4 to recruit SeaBees for construction battalions. Lt Cmdr L E Oehring leads Cincinnati area efforts to enlist as many men as possible. SeaBees serve on land bases to support fleets at sea, under the surface, and in the air.
E. J. Wuest district manager for the Cincinnati area will speak to Batavia Rotary next Tuesday July 6. Milford Kiwanis Club will furnish the speaker and program as guests of the local Rotary group.
