Dr. H. W. Penn, long familiar in Batavia as Col. Howard’s brother in law, dies January 27 1890 in Jackson Tennessee at age 85. A refined surgeon and scholar with European training he remained mentally sharp, loved science, and stayed active in medicine. He spent years abroad and offered generous counsel, leaving behind a devoted sister who cared for him in his final days. He had lived in Batavia about twelve years as a Presbyterian.
