A case tried before Squire Maddox involved two school children Bertha Medley a colored girl eleven and Albert Grove eight. Albert threw a stone striking Bertha. Bertha drew a knife leading to a chase. Bertha was bound over to the probate court and the subsequent probate court verdict found the assault charge proven.
