The public is told B and C book holders must renew within 30 days of expiration. With many B and C books expiring March 1, waiting until the last moment could overwhelm local boards and cause long lines. Apply promptly to avoid delays.
Ohio employers subject to state and federal unemployment laws are reminded to mail their state tax contributions and reports by January 31 to avoid higher taxes and ensure deductions from the federal unemployment tax. Officials stress timely filings for merit rating eligibility and proof of payment for eight or more employees.
The Ohio Department of Highways will issue a limited 50 000 copies of a reprint of the 1942 map due to paper scarcities. Hal G. Sours, director, notes cover will read Ohio Highway Map 1942 and distribution will be kept to an absolute minimum as demand drops with gasoline rationing.
The manager of the Town Hall Theater Batavia thanks patrons for a generous weekly donation to the United Nations Relief fund totaling 51.45. The Mo tion Picture Industry branch of United Nations Relief will receive the funds, with special thanks to World War I veterans Mr. Shinkle and Mr. Moyer for coordinating the drive.
Ohio's unemployment compensation payments rose in 1942 to a total of 14,408,108 dollars for 1,206,137 weeks, an increase of 2,236,950 dollars despite fewer weeks of unemployment. The average weekly total payment hit 12.50, with partial unemployment averaging 6.98, both record highs.
Batavia Grange holds a regular meeting on Thursday at 8 p m with a planned educational program under Mrs I B Jenkins. Members are urged to attend promptly and again on February 18 for a Valentine Party night with anticipated good time and a Valentine to bring.

The Civil Service Commission calls for 64 typists and stenographers to work with the War Manpower Commission in Washington. Salaries rise under new overtime rules to 1752 or 1970 annually, with 40 hour weeks and time and a half for overtime. Applications from men and women are accepted at the local Employment Service office at 1017 Elm St for Civil Service exams.
Miss Gladys Lewis thanks friends for kindnesses during her stay in Batavia. She expresses appreciation for parties and gifts given in the last week of her visit and signs with sincerity.

State Defense Director Ralph H. Stone announced a northern Ohio blackout covering 23 counties from the Indiana line to the Ohio River headwaters. More than 3.2 million residents and 180,000 volunteers will participate as plants and defense volunteers practice air raid procedures and watch duties.

Ajo Arizona converted its sidewalks to scrap rubber for a national drive. The sidewalks measured from 86 to 50 inches in width and the town collected over 66,000 pounds of rubber.

Lt. Gerard W. Cross announces the U S Maritime Service resumes recruitments for Merchant Marine training to meet wartime ship needs. Eligible applicants aged 17 to 35, citizens not restricted by War-Manpower orders, may apply at the Traction Building Cincinnati office. Mary Ellen Evans, 19, a Miami University graduate, plans a chemist post in war production.
In 15 days of a campaign to enroll all Norfolk and Western workers in the payroll savings plan 17 292 or 14 percent of the total payroll joined. L C Ayers Roanoke Va N and W assistant general manager and campaign chairman notes expectations for the drive's final result to be reasonably satisfactory The current drive is the second N and W effort to sell war savings bonds following a 99 8 percent enrollment last May with bonds valued around 2 5 million.
The Fifth Region Office of Civilian Defense calls Clermont County Defense Council attention to an illustrated talk on Blackout Techniques to be held Friday at 8 p m in the Union Gas and Electric Co auditorium at 4th and Main Streets Cincinnati Director Dan T Moore says local defense directors should attend to learn blackout principles and costs The speaker is Sam Hibben of Westinghouse Lamp Division The lecture is part of a free series sponsored by the Ohio Valley Section of the Illuminating Engineering Society.

Clermont County Pomona Grange schedules a January 30 gathering in Felicity. Ohio State Grange Home Economics Committee member Mrs. Pearl Bailey will attend. All Grangers urged to attend.
More automatic coal stokers were bought and installed in August than in any other month in 1941, according to data reported to the department of commerce. Engineers urge installation of new equipment or parts early this season.
A Clermont County committee is formed to study progressive bills on recodifying child laws. Governor Bricker endorsed these measures in principle. Miss Reese of the Child Welfare Board highlights Ohio Children's Code Commission recommendations for better care and protection and urges public support. One proposal calls for state aid covering 50 percent of non-institutional maintenance for county care and 50 percent of administrative costs.
The weekly Girl Scout meeting met at Mrs Neal Dennison's home due to Miss Reese's cold. A First Aid review occurred and games followed. Marilyn Ties earned her Girl Scout Pin with Mary Jane Hughey serving as reporter.
Alice L. Lyons nee Turner died January 28 at her son Ibert Lyons home in Detroit Michigan. Services were held at Mt Washington with interment at Moscow. Frank P. Jones husband of Edna Jones nee Smith and father of Frank W. Jones died January 23 near Amelia. Masonic rites were held at the residence and funeral services were held at 2 30 p.m. Tuesday at Amelia M E Church. Interment was in Batavia Cemetery.
