Deputy Robert Roberts stopped a Chevrolet with two gallons of moonshine on a Milford road. He arrested Stanley Colgan 28, of Cincinnati for possession and transport. Colgan pleaded guilty before Judge Waite and was fined 260 dollars plus costs.
A Thursday storm that battered Hamilton and Butler counties caused extensive damage there but passed through our county with minimal impact aside from flooded streets. The rain eased quickly, leaving fall plowed fields unscathed. A subsequent 60 degree drop chilled livestock and halted milk production until milder weather returns.
Mr and Mrs L A Boys of Felicity Ohio celebrate their golden wedding anniversary on Tuesday February 14 1928. They extend invitations to friends with a formal notice asking for their presence at the celebration in Felicity Ohio.
At the Armory Friday Owensville boys lost 17 to 8 with no points in the second half. Owensville girls fell 16 to 8. Batavia boys and girls plan to play Amelia next Friday with no Batavia game.
A pretty wedding took place on December 19 at Trinity church. Miss Edith Thompson Coe, second daughter of the late J A Thompson Postmaster General of the Bahamas, married Mr D Anderson of the Brown Engineering Company, son of Mr and Mrs R F Anderson of Kansas City.
In that week's issue the note claimed Geo Stewart would quit his chicken business when moving to town. The business will continue with G H Prince in charge and a fresh batch of drifty chicks is coming on.
The Funeral Directors Association of Adams Brown and Clermont held a final assembly hosted at the Daily & Maham firm in Williamsburg. Guests dined at the Presbyterian church banquet room and enjoyed performances by Ruth Moyer and Mrs. K. E. Davis. A contest at Daily Maham yielded Spencer of Georgetown as winner. A Boucher lecture on plaster surgery complemented the evening.
Judge Chas White held a brief Saturday court in his office. Herbert Mack of Ten Mile and Chas Hicks of Moscow pleaded guilty to possession of home brew and were fined 100 dollars plus costs. Stanley Colgan of Cincinnati pleaded guilty to transporting and possessing liquor, fined 250 dollars plus costs, and jailed for default.
The Clermont County Health Board met at Dr. Ireton’s office with four of five members present. They reconsidered the resignations of Dr. Ireton and county nurse Mrs. James Patchell and employed them to serve until next July when the board will reorganize. The nurse is pursuing school work and a replacement would cause significant downtime.
The Miami Township Sunday School Convention will be held at Branch Hill Methodist Episcopal church on Sunday February 5 at 2 p.m. The meeting is in charge of township vice president Charles Holland. Everyone is invited to attend.
Kinman whose lease expired will hold a public auction at Shaylor View Farm on Shaylor Road near Olive Branch Ohio. The sale Saturday February 4 1928 starting 10 oclock EST includes sheep hogs horses cows heifers chickens farm tools a Goodwill stove range and other items. Auctioneers Col A M Ellis clerk Lott Hulick.
A major blaze in Hillsboro Ohio on January 21 leveled two city blocks with damage estimated at 450000. Two firemen were slightly injured as high winds hampered efforts and drew help from Chillicothe Washington Court House and Wilmington. Flames consumed three story business houses the post office a cinema several stores and the Elk's Club building threatening the Hillsboro Gazette and prompting water sprays on the courthouse.
The deadline to obtain dog license tags without penalty was January 20. Tags now cost $1 more per head. Clermont County has 4,500 dogs but only 2,100 hold permits. A new official earns $120 monthly and must provide pounds with food, transport dogs, and supply nets, while hours in darkness stretch his day and expenses exceed receipts.
Clermont county emerges as a national hub for racing grayhounds owner James Houghton of Felicity controls a 16 dog kennel valued in the thousands. The team recently returned from Florida and a litter of nine pups is valued at 4500 dollars at six months. Houghton sent a rep to Ireland to buy 16 thoroughbreds for the track.
The Brunk home robbery last Saturday night remains unsolved with no leads on suspects or stolen items. Conflicting statements were given by a suspect who was released on bond. officials continue a quiet investigation as clues are scarce and details await results.
Church notices say several song leaders could not serve at the desired times, delaying final plans for the union evangelistic campaign. A large audience attended the U B church last Sunday for both services, and the series on the seven reasons Jesus said he came continues, with the seventh and final sermon next Sunday evening.
M. M. Dunford sold his general merchandise business in Owensville to Clarence and Joe Buerkle last week. The two young entrepreneurs plan to continue the store as before to serve the public, with Clarence already experienced in the business. They will operate at the People's Service at the old stand.
The Clermont County Board of Education met January 21 1928 and approved the annual appropriation for 1928 1929 It decided to hold a Teachers Institute in New Richmond in August E H Pattison and A G Bagby were re elected as County Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent for two years at their current salaries The board fixed the first Monday of each month at 9 30 a m for regular meetings.
Batavia Kentucky hosts Wilmore High in a central Kentucky matchup at the Armory on January 28. Wilmore’s strong away from home record has only two losses this season, one to last year’s Kentucky champion. Batavia High aims to avenge a December loss and aims to defend its county clear slate. Regular season tickets not valid. admission 26 cents. game starts 7 30 p m.
The District Meeting of Odd Fellows at Amelia Saturday night was a success with attendees from all district lodges except two and many outsiders. Good talks followed by a fine banquet.
Columbus notes the Bureau of Inspection and Supervision of Public offices requests annual financial reports from chief fiscal officers of counties and taxing districts. Reports cover the preceding fiscal year and must be published in a local newspaper or countywide paper if needed. Publication follows House Bill 188 enacted April 14 1927.
Relatives mourn the sudden death of Rev Harman C Fagin in Griggsville Illinois on Sunday January 8 after morning church service. He was 63 or 64 and died from heart trouble while farming with his son Carlton Hagin. He leaves a son a daughter his mother four brothers and a sister. Funeral services were held Wednesday at Griggsville cemetery interment followed.
Ohio Farmers' Week runs five days from January 80 to February 8 with 895 events. Delegates from every Ohio county, 22 states, and two Canadian provinces attend, with 26 local farm folks expected to register in Columbus. College of Agriculture departments and out-of-state speakers contribute to the program.
Frank Carter, brother of T. D. Carter, died at his nephew's home in Miamiville on Wednesday in his 78th year. Funeral services were held at his Batavia home and burial followed on Friday. He spent most of his life in Batavia and was known and respected locally.
A county letter notes January 17 and 18 visits added fifty new Farm Bureau members in Clermont County. It highlights cooperative purchasing and marketing, tuberculin testing, 4 H and extension activities, plus upcoming meetings and events.
Samuel L. Marsh born August 81 1840 in Clermont County Ohio lived in Jennings County Indiana as a youth. He served three years in the Civil War with the 26th Indiana Infantry and was a rebel prisoner for ten months. He farmed in Minnesota Iowa and finally Orient Iowa retiring in 1912. He died December 23 1927 at 87 years and was buried in Zion cemetery Orient Iowa with funeral by Rev M J Rarick.
