The Milford Town Hall hosts a Farmers Institute on February 14 and 15. Thousands in Cincinnati will view The World in Cincinnati exposition from March 9 to April 6. Countries such as China Korea Palestine and Africa are recreated with painted scenery and authentic life scenes including houses shops temples a school and a hospital. Local stewards in native costumes will explain customs and the Christian civilization effort, creating an immersive, distant land experience.
Brown County grand jury probes misconduct in office with indictments against ex county officials for bribery and false claims. Fair Oak, once a flag stop on the C G P, attracts Cincinnati investors, orchards, poultry, and a planned state funded turnpike with new wireless news receiving station.
Wilmington officials consult Attorney General Hogan on possible methods to raise money for current expenses. The village faces a floating debt of 11 000 with 800 in treasury and 100 000 bonded indebtedness. Annual income is 16 000 and light and water costs 15 000. The exact plan remains to be announced.
Albert Goodyear of Bethel, formerly a Columbus temporary server and last session's Ohio Senate page, earned near unanimous esteem through gentlemanly conduct. He was recommended for and received a page position at the constitutional convention last week, the only Clermont native so honored.
Due to a legal interpretation issue three elected members who were town or township employees resigned. N G Cover Dr Van Horn and Dr Jas Ashburn stepped down. Max Moore Dr Smythe and Homer Buerkle were chosen to fill the vacancies.
Next Friday afternoon the mothers meet at the Batavia school building to discuss heating and sanitary upgrades. Women urge wider participation for the children’s benefit and invite all interested in the schools to attend.
Captain James Deem aged 79 of Batavia township and Miss Lottie Blanchard aged 72 of Union township secured a marriage license in Batavia Monday afternoon and were wed at the bride’s home that evening. Deem owns a farm near Olive Branch and is described as well provided with this world's goods.
The committee reports favorably the Henry resolution to move Presidential inauguration from March 4 to the last Thursday in April and to shift congressional terms to begin the second Tuesday in January. Effective dates would be April 1917 and January 1918 respectively.
Auditor J. L. Larkin named C. M. Long as county sealer of weights and measures last Monday. He will begin duties after state passing documents return from Columbus and may destroy any non compliant scales on sight. Delinquents pay 5 cents to 2 dollars, revenue to county treasury.
In the Clermont hotel parlor in Batavia last Monday afternoon Harry V. Martin and Miss Irma Faringer both of Cincinnati were married by J P E O Lease. The ceremony was witnessed by Mrs Charles Slade and Miss Kate Do ugh ty. The couple returned to Cincinnati after the wedding.
The Supreme Court held physicians and midwives are not required to report births to the State Bureau of Vital Statistics. The ruling came after Dr. J. J. Boone was indicted and convicted in Hardin county court for failing to fill a state form with around 50 parentage questions. The circuit court had reversed Boone’s conviction.
Rumors sweep Democratic circles over a possible break between Governor Judson Harmon and campaign manager H L Nichols of Batavia Ohio. Reports say Michael Devanney may take over temporarily with Nichols in the South unavailable for comment.
The Fair Oak Improvement Association met county commissioners at Batavia court house January 16 to discuss a petition signed by 25 of 80 abutting property owners and 90 percent of lenient feet along the pike proposed for a new road. The State Highway Committee will meet soon to advance steps, with a meeting for property owners at the schoolhouse January 27, 1912 at 1:80 o'clock. Committee members include Louis Nepper president and Chas Kincaid vice president. Also mentions Burdock Blood Bitters as a blood tonic.
Brown County considers purchasing an experimental farm to test land profitability. Petitions seek a local vote on funding, with projects starting on the poorest land to demonstrate best use. Clermont farm at Owensville is being readied for next year, with completion potentially two years away. Miss Pauline Wallace of Milford visits Eli Speidel and family.
Two day session February 6 7 1912 gathers Ohio Methodists 365000 Sunday school enrollees 85000 officers and teachers to Wesley Chapel Columbus with a full program of devotions greetings and lectures led by Rev Herbert Scott Rev L O Hartman Rev Fletcher L Wharton Rev Edward Blake and Rev W C Barclay among others featuring themes Building the School The Strategic Years Holding Our Young People and The Bible in the Life of Man with presentations on graded lessons rural Sunday schools and home church relations.
The Adams County commissioners report $61,594.56 in debt at year end 1911 with no funds to pay under the 1 percent law. Bond issuance may not solve the problem and legality under the new law is doubtful. Clermont infirmary faces a similar shortfall with three years of insufficient funds. Officials refuse to stamp unpaid orders, delaying interest, while bills remain unpaid and creditors lose use of funds. The piece calls for curtailing expenses and pruning the infirmary farm to avoid further waste and costly purchases.
Senator Burton of Ohio proposes a letter mail rate of 1 cent per ounce after July 1 under current conditions. He notes a history of lowered costs followed by higher mail revenues, citing last year’s public outlay of about 162 million dollars for letter postage with roughly 62 million dollars in government profit.
During the regular meeting last Thursday the Daughters of Rebekah lodge installed officers including Noble Grand Elizabeth Applegate and Vice Grand Doris Kain. Other posts filled were Elizabeth Marsh, Jennie Glancy, Ada Kidd, Bertha Haney, Vera Griffith, Verna Miller, Emma Knauer, Anna Dietz, Rosa Buerkle, Nellie Carter, and Ollie Smith. Ice cream and cake followed the ceremony.
The Batavia Woman's Club met last Saturday with Mrs. Anna Tatman for the annual business meeting. Attendance was typical. Miss Melle Hulick presented a paper titled The Mountaineers of the South, which sparked discussion. Elected officers include Mrs. Jarman as president, Mrs. Minnie Griffith as vice president, Mrs. Mopald as recording secretary, Miss Hulick as corresponding secretary, and Miss Townsley as treasurer.
At a special meeting of the Masons last Saturday night the two lower rooms were rented. One room goes to H. B. Glancy & Co. for ten years and the other to the Batavia Public Library. The second story will be used for lodge purposes.
